The skies darkened over Cameron, North Carolina, as Edge approached the Hardy Compound. Edge and Matt Hardy had a falling out years before over Lita. Lita was once with Matt, then with Edge and now with neither. Still, their friendship remained as broke as Matt’s personality. Watching Matt recently on television, Edge couldn’t help to wonder how much of the Broken Matt Hardy persona was a put-on and how much was real.
This question was answered as Edge exited his car and headed for the door of the Hardy home. The door flew open with a maniacally grinning Matt holding his arms open wide.
“Dear, Edge, welcome to my humble abode. May I offer you some green beans,” Hardy said.
Edge paused and narrowed his gaze at his former friend.
“I answered your ‘summons’ here out of curiosity more than anything, Matt. If we could just get to whatever you want, I’d appreciate it,” Edge responded.
“Of course, my liege, of course,” Hardy said as he bowed and ushered Edge into the house.
They went into the living room and sat in two high back chairs across from each other. Silence hung in the air between them and the more Matt grinned like an idiot, the more Edge began to lose patience.
“What do you want,” Edge grumbled.
“Oh, yes,” Hardy said. “After all these years I feel bad about how our friendship ended and, while it might never be rekindled, I wish to offer you a gift that I hope might repair some of the damage.”
Hardy then picked up a golden chalice from an end table.
“This is filled with waters from the Lake of Reincarnation here on the compound. While it has the ability to revive someone and return them to a previous persona, I believe it also has the powers to heal your lingering wounds,” Hardy said.
“Look, Matt,” Edge said with a sigh. “I had to retired from wrestling because of my neck injury. It’s been a hard thing for me. If I could get back into that ring right now, I would, but I can’t, and I don’t need you giving me false hope.”
“Well, what do you have to lose,” Matt said. “If the water works, then you may have your wish and return to the ring. If the water does not work, then life continues on. You have nothing to lose.”
“Fine, if it gets me out of here quicker, just do whatever,” Edge said as he just gives up on talking sense into the senseless Hardy.
“Turn around,” Hardy said while indicating what he wants Edge to do with the spinning of his hand.
Edge sat backwards in the chair. Hardy began to rub the water from the lake and on Edge’s neck. Edge couldn’t help to think how stupid this all was, but then…a strange sensation began to wash over him.
It started at his neck, went down his spine and then coursed through every fiber of his being. It was white hot, but not unpleasant. The feeling then began to retract and everything centered in his neck.
“Wow,” he exclaimed. “That’s really the best I’ve felt in years.”
“I told you it would work,” Hardy said with glee. “Go, have any of your medical wizards examine you now, see what they say.”
Edge stands and turns to face Matt. The sincerity in Hardy’s eyes overwhelms Edge and he almost starts to cry.
“That has to be seen, but even if my neck isn’t fixed for good and I can wrestle again, it’s the thought that counts here, Matt,” Edge said as he held out his hand.
Hardy looks down with tears coming to his eyes now. He grasps the hand in friendship.
At that moment a huge crack of thunder is heard outside and a bolt of lightning can be seen just outside the window striking the lake of reincarnation. The two rush to the window and look outside. The lake was pulsating with the green light and the center of it was swirling, forming a black vortex.
“What the hell is going on,” Edge screams over the howling wind and mounting storm.
“I know not, but let us see,” Hardy said.
With that, the two rushed out of the house and to the Lake of Reincarnation. What mysteries does the lake hold? Wait and see...
