I do think Deadpool is much more popular than you realize. Comic geeks LOVE him. To the point where at least half the excitement for the Wolverine movie is his inclusion and what they do with him. And they're already getting furious because they don't like the actor for it or because they think he's too pretty for them to scar him because they don't think they'll scar him right because they don't think they'll stay true to the character, etc. Deadpool may be a bit of a nice character but he is a BELOVED niche character. There's one guy who was LOVED about 10-15 years ago who I'd best compare him to but that would be a pretty big name drop.
I'm also not really that sure Thing, Punisher, and Green Lantern are household names. Punisher's had a couple of films and his logo is fairly recognizable. Thing is part of a team that is pretty mainstream. But still, not sure they're "household" names. There are still a couple out there who truly are. And GL and the Punisher are certain A-Gamers.
I'd say Nightwing, Thing, and Deadpool are all kind of in the same boat. They're not terribly mainstream but not entirely non-mainstream (one's got a major role in the new Wolverine film played by a marquee actor, one's part of a major team and was portrayed by one of the biggest TV stars in years, and one is just the grown up version of a household name). It takes a bit of familiarity to know them but honestly, comic geeks know them fine and people could have easily "reached" for them out of position just like I suspect the 3 of us did.
So you know... if you're not truly confident that he'll be there for you with your next pick and you want him more than the other guy you're considering because he seems more appropriate for "draft position"? Just go with the guy you'd be more upset not to get.

1. Thanks for not going hardcore on the *pick* posts. 2. The boss rode along with me today, so I couldn't monitor this. 3. As soon as I finished with the boss, I had to announce at a wrestling show. 4. I liked the Shane McMahon pick, and think he should've kept him.
Of the 14 people in this draft, I know the least about comics...so I am purely going with favorites right now. I'll augment as soon as I see some teams forming in my head. Since my favorite is gone (Punisher), I'll go with #2, since I was a kid. (By the way, had Punisher been there, UJOB would have made the choice for me and you'd all be waiting for me second pick right now.) So it's down to two for me. I'm taking a chance here, because I think my other choice just might still be around for my next turn...
12. Iron Man
P.S. - Exalt for the Comicvine link. It will be very helpful.
Green Lantern is my favorite superhero. Of course, I don't know anything about him other than he's a good guy dressed in green that is assisted by Bruce Lee.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, so I'll just address this as if you're not. You're thinking of Green Hornet, who is not qualified for this game, because he first appeared in radio shows in the 1930's.

I honestly considered not drafting Thor at 2 because I know there are guys with more value (i.e. Batman), but I was 100% certain that Thor was not going to drop to #27 for my second pick, and this wouldn't be as fun for me without him on my team.
I was going to defend my pick, but just Lucky basically said it all. I'll just add that in my early drafting years (mostly hockey) I would go over guys I really liked for "logical picks" and the minute I stopped doing that and went with guys I liked, the whole thing was a lot more fun. My all time favorite, Wolverine, was picked, I was thinking of drafting Iron Man, but I said as much as I like martini in the morning Tony Stark, Deadpool was always more fun. My strategy in these early round will be if there's a guy I like that is available and chance are he won't be available the next round, I pick him. And by the way this draft has been going on so far, I think most of you guys are doing the same. I just hope you guys all have the same taste and that it differs from mine. Call it wishfull thinking

I have gone back and forth over these first two picks, but I'm going to follow the theme of this draft and go with one of my absolute favorites if for no reason than he was never afraid to tell Captain America to stick it.
Here's how I look at it. I'm going to make my pick based on a combination of things.
How much I personally like the character relative to others I'm considering. Odds they'll last till next round relative to others. Name value relative to others. Potential influence on votes. (Regardless of name value and the fact that I personally like him, I night have passed on Superman if he had gotten to me. I know Thor and Thai and probably some others are very unlikely to vote for a team with him on it.) And a character's team-building value relative to all of those other factors.
So I'm not saying that personal preference should be disregarded--this would be pretty pointless... well, even more pointless if the teams we end up with don't reflect our personal taste at all.
I just think that other factors should be considered as well. Which is not to say that Habs didn't--I'm biased because I'm not a big Deadpool fan. Spidey plus Deathstroke plus [namedrop] equals <shrug>. Also because he was created by the Black Hole of Suck. I find it annoying that any character created by Liefeld is considered a great, classic character by anybody.
I'm going to warn everyone now, I probably won't pick this evening. The two guys I was hoping would drop were Nightwing and Iron Man. If I had been able to get one of the two, I could have thrown a second pick in to keep it moving. But as of now, I don't have any idea which direction to go since my list wasn't even close to being complete. If an idea comes to me, I'll pop in and make my picks but I'm sorry about the delay I'm about to cause.
