The scene opens with a majestic view of the Johnson Space Center outside of Houston, Texas. Sporting matching Blue Blazers and khaki slacks, Marc Lowrence & Bill Mercer walk in from off camera holding old style wired microphones.
ML: Good evening wrestling fans. We are coming to you today from the Historic Johnson Space Center to preview a card that will truly be out of this world. Bill,
BM: You said it Marc. So many things need to be settled at Blast Off. We’re here today to run down the card and get you ready for this pay-per-view MEGA event.
ML: When we left “Last Stand” last month David Von Erich had just been awarded the main event by DQ. That made two straight pay-per-view main events that David had won by DQ thanks to Tully Blanchard. David was fed up and challenged Blanchard to a match. Blanchard happily accepted, and with the look he had, you got the feeling he had goaded David into doing Exactly what Tully had wanted. Then here came Dory Funk Jr. HE was furious with both Tully for interfering when Dory had David’s shoulders down for well past a 3 count; AND mad at David for not immediately granting him a rematch when David had lectured Dory the previous month about Honor. The three men seemed ready to tear down my interview area, when who else walks in the picture? Ric Flair. The Television champion rambled on about how since he was the biggest star in the company, and that he was only the Television Champion because LSW didn’t have a Hollywood Champion HE deserved the title match with David at Blast Off Dory spouted off how he had pinned Flair clean just 2 months ago, where Flair replied “Pal. One of us has a gold belt around their waist. And one of us has to wear suspenders from the five and dime” Tully meanwhile was accusing Davind of ducking him and the whole scene broke down until security came and broke it up. Moments later we got word that the LSW management had decided to break new ground, and have the first ever Four-Way Elimination Match for the World Heavyweight Championship featuring Dory Funk Jr, Tully Blanchard, Television Champion Ric Flair challenging World Champion David Von Erich
BM: That was certainly unprecedented. Also unprecedented was the finish to the Brass Knuckles match at Last Stand. Both Manny Fernandez & Thunderbolt Patterson covered Black Bart for the 3 count. And the official, unsure of what to do declared both men the winner. Obviously, the 2 men can’t share the title, and so it was quickly decided to have a winner-take-all match at Blast Off Well, Manny hasn’t stopped running his mouth ever since and as good and easy-going a guy as Thunderbolt is, he got to a breaking point and he and Manny just last week had a free-for-all battle backstage that prompted management to issue an order for a Brass Knuckles Title – Last Man Standing Match between ”The Raging Bull” Manny Fernandez and Thunderbolt Patterson for the Astrodome.
ML: another situation that has gotten just way out of hand is the resurrection of the Freebirds/Von Erichs rivalry. Kevin and Michael Hayes were out here talking about both groups recent troubles with the Titanium Trio. Hayes and Kevin seemed to be on the same page, ready to team up and about to shake hands when suddenly Parsons and Garvin came in from out of nowhere and beat Kevin down. By the time Kerry and Mike were able to come to their brother’s aid, Kevin had been bruised and bloodied pretty severly. He hasn’t competed since, but Kerry and Mike both swear that Kevin will be 100% and ready to go in Houston where The Freebirds (Michael “P.S. Hayes, “Iceman” King Parsons, & “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin w/ Precious) defend their World Six-Man Tag Team Titles against Kevin, Kerry & Mike Von Erich
BM: another Von Erich with a score to settle is Fritz. He hasn’t seen eye to eye with his sons here in LSW for a very long time, but when Dory Funk Sr was out here calling David a paper champion and pointing out how Dory Jr had him beat last week if the referee would have been in position. Fritz’s family pride swelled up. As Senior encouraged Junior to go out and “prove the family Legacy” Fritz came out and began to expound how great His family legacy was as well, and as seems to happen all the time around here, words turned into a physical confrontation. So in Houston Fritz Von Erich will take on Dory Funk Sr in a battle of family patriarchs.
ML: and folks, there’s still a lot more wrestling action to talk about! We saw how in the melees during Last Stand that The Dynamic Duo kept focusing their efforts on The Japanese Invasion. That rivalry will come to a head this month at Blast Off as The Dynamic Duo (Chris Adams & Gino Hernandez) take on The Japanese Invasion (Genichiro Tenryu & Jumbo Tsuruta) for the World Tag Team Titles
More tag team gold at stake as well, where the Border Patrol (Jose Lothario & Chavo Guerrero) challenge John Tatum & Jack Victory for the Texas Tag Team Titles The Border patrol is undefeated so far as a team. Victory and Tatum broke a long losing streak right before winning the belts and have a lot of momentum as well. Something here folks, just has to give.
BM: Wahoo McDaniel will be defending his newly acquired Southwest Championship against Darin Childs. Both men are renown for their brawling ability, but this is a regulation match. Will they be able to keep things in the ring?
ML: All this action Plus the reuniting of Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch as The Outlaws. The Fantastics will be in Houston, along with The Missing Link, Brian Adias, Al Perez and more.
BM: So join us fans for Blast Off Coming to you from The Astrodome in Houstin Texas. We’ll see you at the matches!
