I just typed this up for OO and then when I tried to post the board was down. Luckily I anticipated that and copy and pasted. So I'll post it here so as not to waste it until I can get it up there.
Its back! Woohoo!
For those unfamiliar Masters of Horror is a Showtime original Horror anthology. The hook is that each episode is written/directed by a different "master of horror." John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Dario Argento, Stuart Gordon (doing HP Lovecraft), John Landis, Takashi Miike, etc. It being Showtime the censors are off and a number of the episodes get quite disturbing (eating children somehow pops up in multiple stories). But theme clearly varies from director to director with Landis doing more comedic pieces, Gordon doing the deranged stuff you'd expect from Lovecraft, and Miike and Argento being twisted individuals. And of course the quality his hit and miss too.
But for ANY horror fan I think its a must see. Of 13 episodes in the 1st season I'd be shocked for any horror fan not to enjoy at least half of them, depending on tastes. I enjoy a pretty healthy sampling of horror so there's only 1 or 2 pieces that I genuinely disliked and a few others I was fine with but have no burning desire to rewatch. But there are more than a few that I've enjoyed watching multiple times.
Season 2 debuts October 27th at 10 PM EST on Showtime. And the first "Master" out of gate will be Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Salem's Lot, and Poltergeist fame. His entry in Season 1 ("Dance of the Dead") was actually one of the least memorable so I don't know what to expect. But that's sort of the fun of this series. You don't quite know what you're getting with each new episode.
Apparently Miike is gone from this new season. Which isn't all that shocking since his episode was actually cancelled because it was so graphic (and I couldn't actually bear to keep my eyes on the screen). There seems to be a bunch of new faces so I'm guessing there's a few more casualties. But they mostly seem to be the B Listers. Landis, Carpenter, Argento, Gordon, Hooper, and Mick Garris are all back.
In?
Peter Medek (and I'm a HUGE fan his film "The Changeling")
There looks to be a Clive Barker story and I don't think Season 1 had one.
Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child's Play)
Brad Anderson (Session 9, also a bit of a sleeper favorite of mine)
Ernest Dickerson - Who's horror resume looks kind of meh (Bones starring Snoop Dogg, Tales from the Crypt Demon Knight) but who has Juice, HBO's The Wire, a Bond flick, and lots of work with Spike Lee on there.
Rob Schmidt (Wrong Turn, which I actually really enjoy for what it is)
Also of note, ABC announced that they're going to be doing a Masters of Sci Fi version.
