I've always felt that beginning to any song before the vocals hit would be considered the "intro".
Unless it's instrumental, in which case Boer's definition would be appropriate.
My definition IS[/b] appropriate. The beginning to any song would be the "opening bars". The opening bars are often the signature of the song but they are not always the intro. An INTRO is a separate part of the song. If you want to actually talk about song structure and the parts that make up a song, you will find that the intro would be a separate part of a song, just like a Middle Eight, a Verse, a Chorus, or a Bridge.
Now I know that this wasn't the point of this thread, but my definition is appropriate and not just for instrumentals.
To keep with what this thread is supposed to be about I will add
Mr. Crowley from Ozzy. It may have already been mentioned, but I'll say it again because it's a great intro.
"I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem *may* have been, that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being *crushed* by a *dwarf*. Alright? That tended to understate the hugeness of the object." - David St. Hubbins[My5:http://www.myspace.com/kcthevoice]

how did Welcome to the Jungle get left off this list?
The Phillies are everything I hoped the Mets would be - a team that plays their fucking asses off for all 27 outs. They're never out of a game. Solly 10/20/09
