Finally watched it. Enjoyed it in a vacuum. The Purgatory stuff got old at the end and I spent the last 5 minutes walking around waiting for it to end but all told it was about as good an ending as I was expecting/hoping from this crew. I'm pretty sure I disagree with you guys who say that the resolved the show's characters but I DO think they resolved JACK's story. And in the end this was Jack's story so that seems appropriate. Honestly, that whole Purgatory thing (in this episode) would sit much better with me if I could assume it was just Jack's purgatory and not all of theirs. But Ben's role in it kind of destroys that theory. But an ensemble show that spent too much time focused on 1 or a few characters finished off like the story of one man, so that's appropriate.
I don't begrudge anyone enjoying Lost or liking the ride. But my overall take on Lost remains the exact same as it was before this episode. It was an overall sloppily written and poorly crafted story that got lost in its own need for mystery far too often and ended up creating a giant mess that left the writers unable to resolve it in the end and left huge portions of the audience displeased when they decided to choose one character and one path and just tie him up and ignore the rest. If these writers inherited Lost this season I would probably sympathize with them and say they did their best with what they had but they made this mess so its on them.
To those who questioned if it "ruins" the series? There will always be specific episodes, storylines, and even seasons I enjoy and may even rewatch. But the series as a whole ends up feeling like a frustrating story. Its like reading a mystery novel and closing the book not sure what just happened. Maybe you enjoyed the ride enough that it doesn't matter. Some clearly did, some clearly didn't. I don't think either way to look at it is wrong.
