Who is the new Venom? That's a question we've been asking since last week. The next day, it was announced that Venom would be getting a new look and a new series in March. The Venom news continues as even more information has been released.
This clearly will not be the same Venom we've seen before. That's a good thing. It might be hard for long time/die hard Venom fans to accept but change can be a good thing from time to time. I don't want to see another character do the same old Venom shenanigans like Mac Gargan did. I'm really curious to see where this goes. If it doesn't work out, we all know things will change back eventually. I'm definitely ready to see something different done with Venom.
Writer Rick Remender has revealed some of those different things. The new Venom is a black ops agent who will be "chasing a trail across the globe to uncover the man behind a plot to sell the world's dictators and terrorists weaponized [something], all while juggling a double life, and a growing addiction to a symbiote that is constantly trying to take him over."
This sure won't be the same Venom we all know.
The story of the new Venom begins in Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 and continues into Venom #1. Remender also said the tone would be "the same brand of ferocious hardcore violence" Venom fans would expect and there will be a Bourne Identity feel to it. The new Venom will be traveling the world of the Marvel Universe and will journey to ares such as Eastern European war zones and the Savage Land.
This new Venom will only be able to wear the suit a few days at a time. It's mentioned that this new host is supposed to be Venom for a short period of time, for his own safety. What do you think the chances of that happening will be?
There will be some tiny elements of Spider-Man here as the host in Project Venom is keeping his new assignment and black ops missions secret from his family and loved ones. He's also going to be experiencing depression when separated from the suit.
It may not be the Venom we all know but I like this new take. I'm still leaning towards John Jameson wearing the suit (with Flash Thompson a close second). We'll have to wait until February or March to find out.
