I'm not sure why we have to keep 5 or even 3. It's not like it helps your team if you don't keep as many people as you're supposed to since you're just gaining an extra draft pick in the position of the potential keeper. If you want to make a minimum of 3, I'd be okay with it but in no other league where we have keepers are we required to actually keep anyone. It's normally a bonus for being a good team.

Sure. The only issue I can see with not requiring keepers is that it allows for someone to have a massive firesale of all their talent, flooding the market for the playoffs. If you're REQUIRED to keep some guys, and you give a shit, you'll be encouraged to keep some of your more valuable guys.

But then, it's not that big of a deal to me. We can add the issue to the votes for next season.

Since the season is creeping up on us, I wanted to weigh in my thoughts on some of this...

The only thing I really have an issue with is the keeper deal with the Round 4 max. If we want to cut it off to where you can't keep someone in the first round because of our "prize," fine. I can understand that. But I don't think we should be punishing those of us who have made good picks and have had good keepers. I have Ryan Getzlaf who I've kept since this league started and he'll be a third round value this season. I don't think I should be punished because I've been a smart owner. And unless he blows up this year, I don't think I'll be keeping him next year because his preseason ranking is basically equivalent of where I'm keeping him.

I think going to 3 D and 2 UTIL isn't a bad idea. It's worth a try. And I'm always a fan of trying to broaden the categories if they make sense.

I understand what Gimmick is saying. I do think it's important to reward good drafting. However, the way our league is set up, I think the rules themselves reward good drafting by a) only placing a one-round keeper cost per season, and b) allowing you to keep players indefinitely (until you hit the proposed keeper ceiling). Most fantasy leagues I've seen have much stricter costs for keepers - usually 2-3 rounds - as opposed to our 1. They also have season caps for keepers - usually 3 season max - where we have none specifically.

So playing in this league is it's own reward for good drafting, the rules make it so. But I also think it's important to keep the league fresh and to spread some talent around. Hell, after I won two seasons ago I purposefully traded Ovechkin away just so that I could throw him back in the pool and do something different with my team. Then I won again anyway, but that's not important. I'm doing the same with Mike Richards this year who has GREAT keeper value.

I think the amount of time you get to hold onto a guy is more than fair. I've had Mike Green since the league started. The way the rules are set now (even if the cap is voted in), I can hold on to him for something like 10 more years. That seems almost ridiculously UNfair to me, but those are the rules. The top 3 round cap isn't that prohibitive when you look at the broader view. You'll have had Ryan Getzlaf, a top tier guy, for what, 4-5 seasons now? In ANY keeper league, that's great value.

At any rate, we'll vote on it when the draft gets closer.

And speaking of the draft, again this year, I'd like to wait until training camp has at least started. So probably early-mid September again.

Also, Fire has officially bowed out, so if everyone else returns, we'll need one more player. I think Bonestein expressed an interest last year, so if anyone knows how to get a hold of THAT guy, let him know there's a spot for him if he wants it.
