8 hour Draft clock. Try to leave picks with people if you don't think you're gonna make your clock. If you have two or more picks in a row, they are all on the same clock. Clock is suspended from 12midnight to 8am EST.
One more thing, I've made a decision and I'm not backing down on this. So EVERYBODY suck it up and get yourself prepared for next season.
Next season, there will be no keeping players in rounds 1, 2, or 3. Period. This shit's been a massive fucking headache for me this year. The ONLY exception will be one for the winner of the league. They will be allowed to keep ONE player in either the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
My reasoning is thus:
1) This potentially affects 2 players next season, as far as "short-term" planning goes. Those players are Cam Ward, and Nathan Horton. Based on who those guys are, and where their potential positions in the draft will be next season if kept, I'm doing you a fucking favor.
2) This potentially affects 2 players in the next TWO seasons as far as "long-term" planning goes. Those players are Johan Franzen, and Alex Goligoski. Two players. If not being able to keep one of those two guys ruins your WHOLE season, your team probably sucked anyway.
3) This potentially affects 1 player in the next THREE seasons as far as the "long-long term" planning goes. This is Mike Knuble. Dude's gonna be retired in 3 seasons. So… yeah.
4) It should NOT affect selection of any player drafted THIS season because there aren't any sleepers in the early rounds anyway. People know who's valuable in the early rounds and if you think you're being super-shrewd by drafting a guy in round 5 who was going to go in round 5 anyway, you're an idiot. If you REALLY like having a certain guy on your team, draft him WAY too early. You have that right. Or trade for him. There are avenues open to you aside from abusing an already overly-generous keeper system.
5) It keeps more superstars cycling back into the league more regularly. If you make a really good pick and get a really great guy in say, round 7, you get to keep him for 5 years. That's good value. You've done a good job. Picking a superstar goalie in round 4 and then expecting to hold on to him for 3 more years isn't "smart" drafting, it's taking advantage of a dumb rule and is greedy. Don't be greedy. Plus that 4th rounder will probably be available in the 3rd round next season if you REALLY want him. If he's really great and being undervalued, just snake him from everybody in the draft and show us all how awesome at drafting you are.
6) Most importantly, this is a no-cash league with a "Draft exemption" as the prize. Keeping players in the top 3 rounds devalues this prize. Since making this a cash league would basically kill the league, there's no other way around it as far as I can see.
Anyway, I get that people like having the option of holding onto a guy into the upper rounds. I seriously question how much of this is legitimate long-term strategy as opposed to opportunistic luck… but I digress.
After the current season, a player kept is a player drafted, and you can't keep anyone in or beyond round 3. Period.
Round 4 will be the last round from which you can keep a player for next year's draft. Meaning, if you keep a guy from this season's round 4, he will slot as a 3rd rounder next year, but that will be the last time he will be on your team unless you redraft him the following season. So this year will be the last time Cam Ward and Nathan Horton can be kept by Zeebo and Tim.
