ROH Review – 01/28/12
Opening footage of Kevin Steen killing people. Kevin Steen is fucking awesome.
<I love ROH’s opening music, just about on par with ECW’s opening>
LIVE! From the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore Maryland! (see TNA, its good to get out of the damn building once and awhile). Nigel McGuiness and Kevin Kelly are your announcers as always. Take note WWE, TNA and ROH have the two best announce duos in wrestling in my opinion. Tazz and Tenay call the action, advance the stories and can be funny as hell. Nigel and Kevin call the action and advance the story, the WWE really does neither. Cole, as much as some people hate him, is really a great heel color guy now that he has toned it down some. Lawler is pure garbage, Booker is awful, and I don’t remember who the other guy is on SD, he is ok, but Cole tends to just dismiss him too often. Anyway, onto the action!
TOMASSO CIAMPA vs. TJ PERKINS – I don’t know the whole story behind the Embassy and Prince Nana. It doesn’t really seem like much of an Embassy if your whole stable is one guy. Unless there are others I just haven’t seen yet. Anyway, I dig Perkins, I would like to see him in the ring with someone like Aries or Shelley and see what he can really do. Ciampa, eh, I don’t know. Is he someone we have seen before? He looks familiar. They are saying Perkins is undefeated on ROH TV, but I seem to remember him dropping a match to Jay Lethal (a very good match by the way) so I am not sure what ROH is talking about. Good back and forth match, both guys get offense in. I like that, it builds Ciampa without burying Perkins. Ciampa wins with a powerbomb/lungblower combo (ROH seems to use a lot of lungblowers). It looks more impressive than it really is, which is the mark of a good finisher I guess.
GRIZZLY REDWOOD vs. OH MY GOD DEVON STORM IS STILL ALIVE! – Seriously, that is what I said when I saw Devon Storm. Grizzly Redwood is kind of awesome, but he makes Spike Dudley look like Batista. Should be a good match when……..oh no, here we go. Truth Martini (great name for a manager) comes out with Michael Elgin and Roderick Strong (who so far has done NOTHING for me), and offers Devon Storm $500 to take a hike and not piss Elgin off. For perhaps the first time in wrestling history, a wrestler does the smart thing and takes the money and leaves.
GRIZZLY REDWOOD vs. MICHAEL FUCKING ELGIN – Another good example of not doing a squash even though the outcome is obvious. Grizzly gets in a TON of offense, but Michael Elgin, being fucking awesome and all, destroys him in the end. Michael Elgin is one of my favorite ROH wrestlers, I would be SHOCKED if he doesn’t end up in the WWE at some point, hopefully not as Funkasaurus II: Electric Boogaloo.
RECAP TIME – They covered the Steen/Corino match, I need to see this match. I have heard about Corino being insane, and evidently Steen is as well. Not as bloody as I thought it would be, maybe blood isn’t ROH’s thing, still looked like a brutal match. Corino dies. Jimmy Jacobs dies. El Generico dies.
Steen promo – I reiterate my previous comment, Kevin Steen is fucking awesome. Steen makes his debut next week. I can’t wait. Seven days until everything changes. I’ll bet it changes more than whatever Jericho has in mind.
Cornette promo – Cornette does not like Steen. Not one bit. He also puts Steen over HUGE.
Inside ROH – Davey Richards - Kyle O’Reiley – Eddie Edwards drama. I really don’t care about this. I like Eddie well enough, and O’Reiley isn’t bad. I should like Davey but……I don’t know, there is just something about him I don’t like. He looks like a big dumb jock, and sounds like one too. I would guess this leads to some good matches, but so far I just don’t really care.
Mike Bennet (with Maria) he is still pissed at Jay Lethal. I still really don’t care about Mike Bennett. He just seems like a very generic heel. He’s not bad or anything, but he has nothing that has caught my attention.
WGTT are still not happy about being booed in New York. They are not happy at all. No sir. I don’t know, I know WGTT are very good, they are excellent in the ring, I just don’t really like them all that much. They want revenge on the Briscoes, ROH said no thanks, you get the Bravados. The who?
The Young Bucks face the Briscoes for the world tag team titles at the 10th Anniversary show. The Briscoes have some comments on that. They are not fans of the Bucks. The Lady Boys vs. Dem Boys. The Briscoes are also crazy awesome. I want The Briscoes and Kevin Steen on the same team. Make that happen ROH
CEDRIC ALEXANDER & CAPRICE COLEMAN vs. DAVEY RICHARDS & KYLE O’REILEY – Main Event time. The New American Wolves perhaps? Who knows. This drama will have to play out. Good match, Davey Richards does not sell a thing. Coleman and Alexander are pretty good, but in the end, the Possible, Potential, Might Be One Day New American Wolves get the win when O’Reilley has Cedric in a dragon sleeper and Richards hits a pretty unnecessary warrior stomp (a really dumb move IMO). Right before that, Caprice sold a running kick from Davey like he was shot, it was pretty awesome. Nigel had a great line “this isn’t sports entertainment, this is an entertaining sport” well said Nigel
As usual, a great show from ROH. I am really glad I found this, great stuff. I’ll post another one next week.
