My recent bouts with Incompetance

So.. here's the thing.
As some of you know by now, I now work as a jailer in a small county jail. The state of Texas allows you to work as a jailer without official certification for exactly one year. Most counties, including mine, wait until they have to to pay for the certification class (turnover is an issue, and why pay to certify people right away when you can't be sure they'll be around in 6 months)
Up until now, the Jailer certification class has been a 3 week course. Being a mapdot town in the middle of nowhere, it requires out of town travel (90 minutes one way) So the jailer would get paid for the three weeks, get to use a Sheriff's dept vehicle for transportation back and forth, and then the dept would have to pay for the class itself.
Now the training is available online. With me being known as someone who uses a computer regularly, it was a natural decision to save a little money and have me do the class online while at work.
Sounds good so far? Yeah, here's where it gets shitty.
So In early February, the Jail Administrator sets me up with the online class, and tells me I need to have this done "sometime around the end of March" So i dabble with it on and off, and near the end of the month, start hitting it hardcore in late February, and finish up on March 19th.
My admin this entire time doesn't ever give me an exact date, never mentions the class AT ALL. (now to be fair, I don't exactly se her on a dialy basis, especially working nights, but I have at least 6 conversations with her in this time frame)
I go to her on the 19th telling her I'm about to finish up (there's a big Final at the end of the online course) And she tells me "Good, because you still have to do the physical combat class" Which she can't schedule me for until I pass the online test. Oh, and my "expiration date" is March 21!
I pass the test and she starts scheduling me for the 3-day physical combat class. The fist available class is... April 2-4 and in a city over 500 miles away. So I now am unable to work for 10 days.
Now, I do get paid for 8 hours each class day and the day before and day after for travel time, but still, March 22-31st, no work, no pay.
I (and another co-worker from a different department who has to have the same certification for her job) head to Beaumont and take the damn class. I nearly run over an alligator. We pass. Yippee, I can go back to work again
NOT SO FAST!
I check in with the administrator when we get back in on the evening of the 5th. No Chad, you can't go back to work just yet. Now I have to go take the State Certification Test, which is separate from the test at the end of the Online Class, but covers the same fucking information (allegedly)
So She schedules the state exam... for 8 am today! so I have to wait nearly another week to pass the fucking State test and be allowed to get back to work.
Of course I pass and I am put back on the schedule. (startin in about 2 hours actually)
MY issue with the whole thing is... Had I been told that AFTER the online class I had the physical skills class AND another fucking exam, I would have pressed alot damn harder on the online class to be done earlier. Had I known my expiration date was March 21 and not "Sometime around the end of March" I would have gotten the online class done EVEN EARLIER.
Because, hey, I NEED this job and as much as I don't like it, it's pretty good money for an entry level position, plus the county is so small, I never have to deal with the crap like you see on TV. As a jailer job goes, it's a breeze.
But I still NEED it, and I sure as hell can't afford 16 unpaid days off, especially when that COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH SOME COMMUNICATION.
Yes, I have some comp time (vacation, sick, etc..) I can use to prop the paycheck back up, but the point is.. I shouldn't have to. It;s not my doing that I couldn't work for 3 weeks, and my wife is having surgery in the next 6-8 weeks, and I will need 4-5 das off for that, so I need to keep my comp time for that as well.
So to my administrator, Thanks for leaving me out to dry, you bitch.
