THE STORY
John Marston is a former outlaw looking for an all-new life in 1911 America. When corrupt government agents Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham threaten his and his family’s freedom and well-being, Marston is sent across the American West to help uphold the law and to achieve redemption. His job is to kill or capture his former gang members, including his old friend and gang partner, Bill Williamson, or his family will pay the ultimate price.
After being shot by Williamson, Marston is taken in by Bonnie MacFarlane and her father, and he repays their kindness by working as a ranch hand. During this period, Marston also spends some time helping Marshall Johnson and his deputy, Eli, round up various outlaws in and around the town of Armadillo.
Williamson is holed up in Fort Mercer, which Marston attacks with the help of Marshall Johnson, his lawmen, and snake-oil salesman Nigel West Dickens, but Williamson escapes the fort and heads to Mexico.
Marston follows Williamson to Mexico and meets up with legendary gunman Landon Ricketts. The two men travel across Mexico searching for Williamson and fighting injustice. Eventually, they catch up with and capture Williamson. Marston returns him to Ross and Fordham in the States, where he’s informed that his work is not yet done. He must capture or kill his former friend, mentor, and gang leader, Dutch van der Linde.
Reluctantly, Marston hunts van der Linde down and is able to corner him. In the end, Marston is forced to kill his mentor, at which point his wife, Abigail, and son, Jack, are returned to him and he is able to resume his peaceful life as a rancher.
However, Ross and Fordham aren’t done with Marston yet. They feel that he is an irredeemable criminal, so they storm his ranch and gun him down in cold blood.
Years later, we follow Jack Marston as he hunts down Edgar Ross. Along the way, we learn that both Abigail Marston and Archer Fordham are dead. Eventually, Jack located Ross in Mexico and the two have a showdown, which Jack wins, killing the man who murdered his father and gaining his revenge.
