Out of curiosity, what class was this? Cause I never had a class like that. But you and I were in different circles if I remember correctly. Maybe it's a college thing as well. Not sure, I do wish I had classes like that though....
You have a degree in Communications or Film, correct?
I have a degree in Communications with no official concentration but a great deal of focus on film and radio.
The class in question was a philosophy course taken as a core. It was actually my first semester of college but wasn't a 1000 level course because I was in an honors program and my advisor was an asshole who threw us all into advanced courses. It meant me being fucked with Spanish and Math by being in 2000 level course I wasn't ready for but being in that joke of a Philosophy course and a Science course that was honest to God equal to the shit I teach in 6th grade (connect a battery to a bulb through a paper clip).
College really wasn't bad and once one found their path and wanted to learn I really did have a strong education, but the point was there were ALWAYS joke classes to be found. And while I have no doubt that firewoman isn't a joke professor the point is that a lot of college students get by on a remarkable lack of intelligence. It seems like the unfortunate playout of college. Those who REALLY want to learn can, those who want to coast need no nothing.
We live in a society that advances students because of age and not intelligence. Where standardized tests that can be taught for months can mean more than legitimate education. And where a great deal of college students coast by with out ever even learning basic survival skills and basic logic. Unfortunately it doesn't strike me as odd at all and when I attended college I was in no way surprised by people who couldn't manage to pull off mindless things. And in the workforce I still encounter people who seem clueless to basic common sense.
Personally I support Fire flunking every one of those assholes. Dumping low quiz scores and take home quizes are the crutches that we all relied upon. And I say that as an honor student who still knew that it was stupid to work too hard in classes I didn't need or want to in. Pushing kids makes them make a choice. But for the most part we don't want to.
