When NYPD Detective Jake Peralta’s wife passes away, leaving him to raise their 11 year old daughter Harriet (who fancies herself a bit of a spy) he finds himself overwhelmed by both his job and his personal life. His partner, long suffering Detective Carl Winslow and best friend NYPD IT Specialist Maurice Moss help where they can, but it’s clear they’re out of their league.
Desperate, Jake enlists the aide of his retired father Andy Taylor, former small town sheriff of Mayberry and moves to New York to help his son and grand daughter out. His small time way of doing things sometimes clashes with his son’s faster paced life, but he might just have the right things to say.
Meanwhile Christine Sullivan, having transitioned into a small private legal firm, has problems of her own. Her husband, Officer Robert Barone, has left her all alone with their troubled foster child Steven Hyde. At work she often clashes with sleazy lawyer Bob Loblaw across the courtroom, with the help of Martin Crane, a former police office who often helps with PI work. Ann Perkins, her best friend and nurse just happens to know the perfect guy to set her up with.
Jake and Christine’s worlds collide with the first date and so do their families and problems. Can Christine get over her bad experience with another police officer and find happiness with Jake? Can Jake get over the death of his wife? Will Jakes precocious and curious daughter rub off on Christine’s troubled foster child, or will Steven be a bad influence on Harriet? Can patriarch Andy Taylor help all of these troubled youngsters navigate life? And why did Jake’s Captain, Barney Miller, just approve a new transfer of Officer Barone to his precinct?
Tune in this fall, Tuesdays at 830PM EST/730 Central on Fox.
