[Leo]

Eric: This card is just okay to me. Nothing sets me on fire. Steiners vs. Lee and Williams is probably the match I like the most followed by McIntyre and Cobb. It’s a mix of people I don’t like or am not that familiar with, which is totally a me issue.

Hodgey: You took your two best matches from the last card and slapped them together into a fatal fourway Hell in a Cell. On one hand, I think that would be a really great, chaotic match. On the other hand, I think I would have preferred Rock vs. Jake. Outside of the main event, I really dig Valkyrie vs. Chyna and Hardys vs. Good Brothers. Miz vs. Muraco feels odd. I just don’t think you have a lot of guys on your roster who match up well with Miz. I’m really sad to see Ventura and Monsoon broken up, I loved that team. The handicapped match feels like too much of a styles clash. Usos vs. PoP will probably be way better than it has any rights to be. Everything else is decent.

Cole: The Womens War Games is alright, but both teams feel like they’ve got a real weak link; Horsewomen with Carmella and the other team with Statlander. Tag Title match does nothing for me. Everything else is fantastic with the stips and match-ups: Owen vs. Rollins, Bret vs. Jarrett, Zayn vs. Kid, the Hart Family tag, Beefcake vs. Valentine. Even the flag match could be sneaky good.

Cliff: The War Games feels too bloated with the women in there too. But that storyline is good putting the Heenan Family against the Dangerous Alliance. At first I was thinking why do Heyman and Heenan need to be away from ringside if there’s a cage, but then I remember Heyman has interfered in WarGames. Them having seconds is a nice touch too. I want to see VanSant and Stevenson mix it up. Everything else is just okay to me with Big E vs. Lee and Woods vs. MJF having a lot of potential. Still have to give you points for creativity.

Sharky: Odd mix of dudes for the Elimination Chamber and I find the gimmick overplayed in these fantasy drafts, but I believe this is the first we’ve had this go round. I used to watch NWA Hollywood when it was on a random cable channel, so that’s a neat call back a lot won’t get. I would have preferred the NAO and RnR stay broken up since you started that way. Honestly, nothing on this card moves me.

Mayhem: Love the top two matches and the bottom three. Santana vs. Page should be surprisingly good. Otis vs. Gordy I think could be good without the stipulation, but it doesn’t hurt it. Del Ray vs. Scurll just made me laugh, too bad you don’t have Buck Zumhofe.

WWEfan: Sammartino vs. Brody is money. Richter vs. Bayley is a repeat from your last card with nothing new added. The tag tournament is just kind of there.

Eco: Foley vs. Rude doesn’t need hell in a cell, but it doesn’t hurt. Rude was always good in a cage match and we know Foley’s HiaC history. I’m astounded to find Lesnar vs. Batista never happened in WWE (did in OVW). Awesome vs. Yoko and Dunne vs. Reigns I like. The women’s Elimination Chamber sticks out as an oddity, so that’s a second EC this round.

Dev: This leans back to being heavy on the gimmicks and stips, including the mixed matches. My favorite here is the four sides of steel and the Guerrero vs. Jericho match for the advantage. The Darling Cup semifinals are both good match ups and I don’t think they need the stips. Daniels vs. Benjamin I would have liked straight up.

SG: I should have figured Dusty would have returned for WarGames. That’s a great match and it brings together a lot of your storylines. A weakness, and that’s on me, is that I’m not up on Japanese talent, so your two title matches don’t do anything for me. The rest of the card is solid. It’s better the more I look at it. Doom vs. Furnas and LaFon, Lynn vs. Nova and Kanyon vs. Dinsmore I like and Fantastics vs. The Nation could be a sleeper if it’s a reverse tag formula where D-Lo works the bulk of the match going to Johnson hot tag. (I assume the Nation are the heels).

Solly: Two many multi-person matches and gimmicks. An elimination chamber, gauntlet match and ladder match all together feels like too much. Individually, that’s good talent for the chamber and ladder match. The gauntlet match, not so much, as those aren’t really long haul teams.

Matte: There’s a lot of things I like, mainly Punk vs. Rhodes. I also dig Mysterio vs. Aries, Cage vs. Roode vs. Ciampa, Private Party vs. Next Generation and Allin vs. London. Von Erich vs. Riddle will either be good or a train wreck. The pre-show is solid.

As a suggestion for future showdowns, maybe let’s not have the most important parts happen over a holiday weekend. It seriously hamstrung me, preventing me from doing the promos and planning I needed to do to properly present my fed and cards

To piggyback on BCs comment, I think we needed more time between deadlines. 72 hours MINIMUM to vote, especially over a weekend, and Id lean 4 days there. and then at least another 72 hours to get cards in.

I also hated the format. I would always rather have a standard 1 v 1 or 3 way poll, but I get 17 is an impossible number to do any kind of real bracketing with, but putting all of us into one poll is too much to look at all at once IMO (especially in the short windows)

If we are doing this kind of poll, break them into blocks of 4 or 5 and have 2 votes for each and one PB overall somewhere. The blocks wont be even, but that can be randomized simply enough where things even out some.

I feel like I could pick 2 out of 4 or 5 easily and quuckly enough. It took me nearly an hour in the 1st 2 rounds to read and evaluate each card amd come up with a vote. I didnt have that kind of time the past 2 days. But I could have probably done 4 polls in 10 minutes each across a couple days

Leo, Im not trying to be overly critical. Apologies if it sounds like I am. I as much as anyone know how much of a pain running these showdowns can be, and I thank you for stepping up.

What we've found is the longer you string out the card rounds, the more people you lose. And if you don't give hard deadlines with a set schedule, people won't turn in and/or complain about how they didn't know when stuff was due.

In the future, more consideration can be given for weekends and holidays. However, there's nothing against writing your cards early and sending in early. I had several people send in next round cards before voting was over for the previous round. I had all three of my cards written before add/drop closed.

We've also found that head to head is completly unfair. What you usually wind up with is two really good cards going against each other, two lousy cards going against each other, or somebody not turning in and somebody gets a free win and a bunch of points for a tie breaker. This style is much more fair in giving every card equal weight per round.

What could be in the future is having two voting blocks. Like this time could have been 8 vs. 9. Then after three rounds the top two for each bracket go against each other, so you have a Bracket A and Bracket B winner and they face off in the finals. I'd be against going smaller than two voting blocks, because then you have the same problem of good cards getting screwed and others being helped out by people not turning in.

I admit I had an advatage, because I was reading cards as they came in and I placed them, so it was easier for me to write comments as well.

All fair points by everyone - I'll say for myself that I think I need to write all my cards in advance in the future like Leo did, because I've consistently missed at least one deadline in these shorter windows the last couple years.

If we don't lengthen anything, I also like the idea of a "you up" reminder system, though I wouldn't want that to fall on the person running the showdown; maybe just a norm that you ping people who the showdown runner flags still haven't submitted 6 hours out. I know I was a lot better about the draft clock than usual this draft because so many people would FB Message or text me when I was up for a while.

On promos, I think there's just a tradeoff between losing people through the showdown period and having time to promo. The 2009 draft had a ton of promos - maybe we were all younger and had more time then - but the showdown period also went for a full month.

Next year I'll probably just write my first card without my last ten people (unlike this year where I put my R34 person in the main event) just to get a card finalized and moving on to my second card. (But I didn't get 80% of my promos out for my first card anyway, since I was so obsessed with my NAMEDROP side project.)


Edited to add: with all that said, it is QUADRUPLE the work to actually write a card and RUN these tournament rounds, and I HATE doing it when I have to (and others often pick up my slack), so super super kudos to Leo for handling it all. Grateful to you!

So, yeah, first of all, thank you to the powers that be that ran the draft and then the showdown.

My thing was that I was waiting on feedback from round 1 voting, to see if I was on the right track, or needed to revamp it. Even though I had a rough game plan, the devil is in the details, but my schedule was getting crazy so I kinda had to get Cards #2 and #3 completed before I had any feedback.

I think the biggest thing would have been the turnaround from card #3 to the Final Four. I was on the cusp of making the Final Four, and had a rough game plan for Card #4, but didn't want to spend too much time on it, as I didn't know if I would be making it or not (Narrator: He did not). So I would suggest that at a minimum, we need two days between the end of Card 3 voting and the start of the Final Four.

I believe that 17 is a larger number than recent Wrestling drafts. So I like the idea of an 8/9 split, and staggering the cards. So the East Division turns in on Monday, Voting on Tuesday, and then the West Division turns in on Wednesday, Voting on Thursday, etc. It also was a rush to do promos and list results and result storylines.

I disagree 100% with this point. Head to head matchups are the better option in these. Maybe a three way poll if the numbers bear it out.

Your examples happen, thats the nature of randomizing, but in three or four round robin rounds, that effect is diluted.

Short voting windows work for these kind of polls where voting is easier. If we are doing the long form, 2 days is not enough time.

I am shown online often here, but those come in 3 minute spurts. Jump on, check a draft, like a post, and out. Its only once or twice a week I have an hour to devote to sitting reading/posting/creating.

I get the time issue. It's easier to read a couple cards, vote and come back later and do some more. With all the cards at once, you feel like you have to read them all at one time and maybe even take notes and that takes much longer.

However, I can't get behind the head to head being more fair, just on math alone. What's more fair to put your drafting and booking skills against one random person or the field at large? And I don't think it dilutes, because if you get one win out of three for free, that's a third of your total. And if total votes is a tiebreaker and everyone just votes for you, this year, that would have been 17 free points if everybody voted.

We're at an agree to disagree point. And the thing is, you're never going to do something that pleases everybody. If I wind up doing this next year, I would be up to lengthening the voting time, especially if weekends and holidays are in play, and maybe breaking it up into two blocks, but I wouldn't do the head to head except for the finals, because at that point you've got the best of the best and people who you know will turn in cards.

I think knowing that in advance too would help a ton. We cant know precisely when the draft will end, but putting out the showdown format early would benefit us all so we lnow, hey, these windows are gonna be tight, and can try to be ready. It felt like this year it was BOOM heres the format and it caught some of us in an awkward place.

I'll keep this simple. Hate the bulk voting because it basically becomes who has the best top 2-3 matches and undercards are meaningless. Hate the truncated timeline this one was under.

And then on a personal note, while I appreciate constructive criticism, I feel that getting negative feedback 30 seconds after the card is posted almost definitely influences subconsciously how others view my card and almost universally, you've always hated what I do in these showdowns, Leo.

As admitted, I guess I had an advantage of seeing the cards as they came in and writing comments. My hope was by people seeing comments on the threads, they'd post their own, that didn't work.

I will say, that I'm not influenced by the comments of others and I don't read the comments before reading the cards and casting my votes, in the past.

While I didn't like your first card, Dev, I was complimentary on cards two and three. It's back to the "you're not going to please everybody." Some people's booking and talent sensibilities are different than others. There's talent some people like and others don't. There's match types and booking styles some like and others don't. We don't mesh most of the time and that's okay. Hey, it's why ice cream parlors just don't serve vanilla.
