From today's Chicago Tribune:
And from Yahoo Sports yesterday:
And this is from today's Chicago Sun-Times:
So, it looks like it's going to be the Braves or the Cubs. If Hanson is included in the deal, Peavy is Atlanta-bound. However, the new rumor is that the Cubs are getting a third team involved.
MTA: Looks like no Mark Cuban.....
Well, that sucks.....
The Cubs have strengthened their bid to land San Diego's Jake Peavy — one person in the know describing it as a "major push" — who has expressed a desire to pitch in Wrigley Field. And well-placed sources say the Cubs could take both Peavy's $63 million for four years and a higher-than-expected new deal for Ryan Dempster. It now appears the Cubs have raised their initial offer to Dempster to four years instead of three, with the dollar amount believed to be about $50 million, with the hope Dempster will sign before Thursday, when he can talk with other teams. … Atlanta remains the favorite to land Peavy because, as one top executive said, "The Cubs don't have enough [top prospects] to give in return." Young pitcher Kevin Hart might be one to go in a deal. … The Yankees and Angels also believe they're in the Peavy sweepstakes. …
And from Yahoo Sports yesterday:
The Chicago Cubs have leapt to the forefront of the Jake Peavy trade discussion, though the San Diego Padres are continuing to talk with the Atlanta Braves in hopes of extracting a better package, sources told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday night.
The team that lands the former National League Cy Young winner could depend on which includes its top pitching prospect, according to the sources. The Padres have asked the Cubs for right-hander Jeff Samardzija as the headliner of a package that could include outfielder Felix Pie, pitcher Sean Marshall and infielder Ronny Cedeno. Other potential pieces, another source said, were pitcher Kevin Hart and minor-league pitcher Donnie Veal.
San Diego would prefer to strike a deal with Atlanta, which has offered a cache of good players – shortstop Yunel Escobar, pitcher Charlie Morton and minor-league outfielder Jordan Schafer – but won’t budge on top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson.
The inclusion of Samardzija – whose much-discussed no-trade clause is limited, according to a source – could motivate the Padres to complete a deal. As he left the general managers’ meetings in Dana Point, Calif., on Thursday, Padres GM Kevin Towers told a small group of reporters that he planned on trading Peavy before the winter meetings, which start Dec. 7.

The key to the Braves deal is sending infielder Yunel Escobar to San Diego. A source said Peavy, who can veto any trade, worries the Braves won't be competitive without Escobar. That concern could kill the deal or nudge Peavy into seeking a lucrative new contract. Either way, that could favor the Cubs, who are unlikely to make a deal that would significantly weaken the team. The source speculated Peavy likely would ask the Cubs only to pick up his option for 2013 worth $22 million.

MTA: Looks like no Mark Cuban.....
Global financial crisis or not, baseball's old guard plans to stand firm against letting Cuban into the club. ''There's no way Bud and the owners are going to let that happen,'' a Major League Baseball source said this week. ''Zero chance.''
Well, that sucks.....
