Matte Wrestling Federation owner, Tod Gordon, walks out to the ring to address the sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom crowd. Advertised as the kickoff of a promising new independent promotion (run by the founder of ECW itself, no less), fans are anticipating an action-filled show, as well as a few major announcements.
Tod Gordon: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for purchasing a ticket and coming here tonight despite having so little information about the MWF. I appreciate your devotion to the product and your trust in me to deliver it to you. Moving on, tonight, you'll be treated to some of the best names this business has to offer—some of the best tag teams, the best champions, the best luchadores—doing what they all do best.
Now, I'll address some major bullet points that factor into the future of our product. First of all, and perhaps most importantly, is the MWF commissioner. I've done all the pre-show work—signing names, booking venues, printing championships—and that's where my duties are set to end. I'm the money behind the show; I need someone to handle the booking. I've hand-picked three individuals who I believe I can trust in such a capacity. Tonight, I've given them free reign to choose their opponent. Next week, however, when the cameras start rolling and the networks start broadcasting, they'll be facing one another in a triple threat match to decide which one of them will take on the role. These three men are...Daniel Bryan, whose ego I know will not get in the way of him creating the best product he possibly can...Chris Jericho, who knows just what the fans want, as well as just what the fans don't want, and just what the fans don't know that they want...and Triple H, who has the most successful wrestling company in the world strapped to his back as proof of his abilities. Let's see who they've each chosen as their opponent tonight...
A pre-recorded video plays for each of the three men:
Daniel Bryan: And I can pick anybody on this list? Ok, I'm picking Zack Sabre Jr. He's a mat-based wrestler with a big focus on submissions, much like myself. I respect his ability to create and innovate so many ways to lock his opponent up. He's been a big name on the indies for a while now, and I only see him getting bigger. He's the guy I'd most like to get in the ring with tonight.
Chris Jericho: Man, there's a lot of great options here. Some that I've faced before, some that I haven't. Alright, here we go. This kid never ceases to amaze me with the things he's able to pull off. One of the most talked-about guys out there right now. Mr. Ricochet, tonight, show me what you're all about.
Triple H: You know, I could run my finger down here to the bottom of the list and choose this guy here. Who is this guy? I don't know, but I'm not going to do that. I saw this name stick out as soon as I glanced at the paper. This kid impressed the hell out of me when we brought him in for the Cruiserweight Classic. I would've signed him to a contract in an instant; I tried to, in fact. Let's see how long he's able to hang in there with a guy like me. Triple H, The King of Kings, vs. The Golden Star, Kota Ibushi.
Back to Tod Gordon in the ring:
Tod Gordon: And that, folks, is your triple main event for tonight. And while these names are fresh in our minds, I'll address the first championship here in the MWF, the Openweight Championship. It will be contested for next week against two of the three men who were just picked to main event the show tonight. These two men competed in the Cruiserweight Classic, and were the top picks to meet each other in the finale before both opting out of a contract. I'm putting on the match that should've been, Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Kota Ibushi, for the Openweight Championship.
Also up for grabs next week is the Tag Team Championship. These two belts will be contested for under Freebird rules, and so tonight, I've put the four three-man teams that we have into two qualifying matches, with the winner of each moving on to compete for the belts next week. The standard two-man team isn't out of the equation, however, as they will compete against one another next week to determine who will be the first challengers to the inaugural champions. But that's next week. Tonight, these men prepare for that meeting in two separate triple threat matches.
And that brings us to the Masked Wrestler Championship, named in honor of one Theobaud Bauer. I've been pitting masked men against one another in matches spanning several promotions, creating a division to compete for the Masked Wrestler Championship. It's now down to nine men—three from Japan, three from Mexico, and three from the United States—who will continue the tournament with the semi-finals taking place next week. Tonight, they will be taking a break from the tournament style match, and will be competing in a masked wrestler gauntlet. You'll get a chance to see what each of these men has to offer, all in a single match.
And that should just about cover all of the bullet points. I don't believe I've missed anything.
Just then, a familiar theme song starts up and out comes a sharp-dressed man with slick black hair.
Alberto Del Rio comes through the curtain and both men walk to the ring.
Alberto Del Rio: Mr. Tod Gordon, you put together this company, you make these matches, you give people the choices, but you don't give Alberto Del Rio his choice. I come from a wrestling family, not like a Daniel Bryan, not like a Chris Jericho, and I did not marry into one like a Triple H. I am the one who should be given the commissioner power. I will take this company from this tiny ballroom and move it to arenas, to stadiums. I know how to do what these other men have no clue.
Tod Gordon: Mr. Del Rio, Mr. Rodriguez, it's a pleasure. I've seen your work, I've seen some of your ideas, and I won't say I wholeheartedly disagree with you. I will say, however, that next week's card is all but set in stone. Although, there is one singles competitor who—and he'll have to forgive me for this—must have slipped past me when I put the show together. You can have your chance at being commissioner, if you can defeat him next week. But that's next week. Tonight, we'll see you prove your grit against one of the toughest men in the business today, Katsuyori Shibata. Thank you all!
Tod Gordon exits the ring, leaving Ricardo Rodriguez and Alberto Del Rio to contemplate the situation for a moment before following suit...And then the show begins!
