After several months of speculation, Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, and the Young Bucks have finally announced the rumored Alpha Elite Wrestling promotion.
"Last time, they went all in. This time, we bet on Jericho, baby!" said Jericho as part of a midnight announcement that advertised an Alpha and Omega event featuring Jericho, Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, Samoa Joe, Vader (who is somehow alive), Ricochet and Nigel McGuinness. A rally was announced in Raleigh for May 1 at 10 am ET. While there is no television deal announced, PWInsider reports there are multiple offers in place.
The promotion will be backed by Eric O'Mac of the North Carolina Coaches Association while Jericho, Omega and the Young Bucks are all expected to have mutli-year deals.
Chatter about a possible national wrestling promotion began as early as October, when consummate pro wrestling revolutionary Chris Jericho vehemently denied any involvement with a new wrestling promotion. This came in response to reports that Jericho and Omega were in talks to launch a promotion.
Here is the timeline of events:
October 19, 2018—Chris Jericho issued a denial of any involvement with a new wrestling promotion via the following tweet:
(If I could figure out how to embed tweets here, I would.)
Chris Jericho (@iamjericho): I’m starting my own wrestling company? AWESOME! Im also starting my own movie studio w #LadyGaga, my own carwash w #Bono & my own bakeshop!
November 22, 2018—Trademark filings for "Alpha Elite Wrestling" and "AEW" were filed, all but confirming that a new promotion was being formed. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc) noted people in WWE were very interested in the venture. Meltzer also noted that while Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho were rumored to be linked to the promotion, it would not get off the ground without the Young Bucks.
December 31, 2018—Chris Jericho (wearing a Leafs jersey) and Kenny Omega were spotted in Section 328 at a Carolina Hurricanes game. Eric O'Mac is a noted fan of the Hurricanes, who beat the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-1 game.
April 24th, 2019—Always a shrewd mind for drumming up rumors, Chris Jericho took to Instagram to thank Eric O'Mac for hooking him up with tickets to Game 7 of the first round of the NHL playoffs where Y2J was on the ice to see the Washington Capitals lose another big game. As noted, Eric O'Mac has been prominently linked to the AEW venture.
April 25th, 2019—Shortly after 10:30 a.m, Chris Jericho and The Elite announced Alpha Elite Wrestling with an event Alpha and Omega. The announcement was also featured on the latest episode of Eric O'Mac's future podcast. A May 1st rally was announced in Raleigh, NC. A future show, to be named after O'Mac's beloved Hurricanes, is rumored to be titled "Bunch of Jerks."
