What are the expectations for a movie based off a video game vs. a sequel to what's probably regarded as the best comedy of all-time?

Plus how in the blue fuck did Jackie Mason pull a piece like Dyan Cannon? Only in Hollywood.

Yeah, sure, expectations for a video game movie are low TODAY, but at the time Street Fighter came out, it was one of the very few video game based movies, and a very popular video game at that. I only know of Super Mario Brothers as a live action video game movie that came before it.

I'm voting Caddyshack II because it was the considerably worse movie. But I continue to think Solly's just stupid with this whole sequel think. Who cares how great Caddyshack was? You've all clearly laid out the myriad of reasons that you should have lowered your expectations upon watching the damn thing. The loss of 3/4ths of the cast that MADE the original and relying on Chevy Chase after his star had crashed. Fine. The first movie rocked and that got your hopes up. But then you should have looked at that movie poster and brought them back down again.

I don't get why we're consistently grading movies based on their predecessors. Its different if we're talking about Matrix Reloaded or something like that. The sequel was close to the original, had all the principle parties involved, was clearly setup by the original, and was part of the larger story. Fans of the original had every reason to expect it to be strong. Its different if we're talking about the Star Wars Ep 1-3. They were done decades after the originals and few fans wanted them. The director had already disenfranchised much of the fanbase with edits he had done to the original 3. The new 3 threatened to fuck with the world and continuity that these fans had grown to love over 20 or 30 years. But Caddyshack II? Blues Brothers 2000? They were sequels of comedies. They in no way damage the originals. You went in knowing they were lacking many of the key parts that made the 1st ones great and didn't replace them in a suitable way. You know they were just studio cash grabs. So what's the big deal with it being a sequel? Did Caddyshack II in any way hurt Caddyshack to you?

Caddyshack II was however a horrible movie. And stu's right. Street Fighter was VERY highly anticipated at the time. I remember going out to see it with the friends. It was the video g@me we had lived and breathed for years come to life. Think Transformers or Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. But I really didn't think it was THAT horrible. At the very least it was better than Mortal Kombat.

Caddyshack II because it sucks all on its own.

I don't care what franchise it is, if someone slaps on a 2 or 3, I expect it to be on par with the original. And besides, take it by itself and Shack 2 still sucked big hairy balls.

If you expect a sequel to be on par with the original it just means you've learned nothing over the 3 decades or so you've been on this planet. The rate of pulling that off for even one sequel has to be under 50%.

But yes, the movie sucks plenty all on its own.

No way, Lucky. Mortal Kombat was better than Street Fighter. I mean, both were bad, but Mortal Kombat, at least to me, was an enjoyable bad. Street Figther was just god-damn awful. And what a way for Raul Julia to go out, too.

Maybe they're both equally bad, but that Street Fighter being bad affected me more. I loved the game, whereas I only liked Mortal Kombat. I had fun with Mortal Kombat. Street Fighter just pissed me off.

Yeah, on second thought I'm not sure why I said that. I actually kinda enjoyed both Mortal Kombat films. They sucked but it was harmless suck. Like watching that weird ninja show that used to air on Saturday mornings.

But I still say Street Fighter wasn't ALL that bad in the end. I mean Van Damme is fucking horrible but he always has been. It sucks for Julia. But it had Cammy portrayed by one of the hottest women on the planet. Blanka was half way decent looking. Zangief and the samoan were kind of amusing. And I liked that Rastafarian dude. They even got that pretty boy fighter with the mask in early in the film and I always loved that guy.

Then again I haven't watched the film in over a decade.

I liked the first Mortal Kombat but the second was much worse then Street Fighter.

Did Blanka even fight? DeeJay the Jamiacan guy didn't fight either. He just sat behind a desk. I think Zangief and Honda barely fought, you just saw them run into each other with their shirts off and that was it. Vega fought, so yeah, that was fine. Vega was always one of my faves in the game. And don't forget Doctor Dhalsim. Yay.

I think in Mortal Kombat, everyone except Raiden McCloud fought, and at least he got to do fun electricity tricks. Shitty Shitty Ryu did the fireball that made the screen flash. Yay.

Ok, now I'm hating on it on geekdom of Street Fighter. I still think it was stupid. I love how there was that random third guy with Cammy and Guile and I didn't know who the fuck he was until the 3rd act when Guile asks "T-Hawk, what's the deal with the feather in your head." Just so geeks won't ask "well where was the big native american guy all this time?" Stupid.

I always liked Cyrax. And Nightwolf. Oh man, that glowing axe-wielding Indian dude was awesome. I still remember how cool the announcer dude always sounded when he said Nightwolf.
