I started thinking about this the other week when I was talking to dragon about his decision on whether to stay in the league or not. And this week a couple of guys have brought it up, so I guess its time to touch the issue. Basically, I figure last offseason went pretty well so we can pretty much stick to it, a few adjustments aside. So that being said, here's the basic layout I'm thinking.
August 10th, 2007
- Trading Deadline. No more Major League Trades. Minor Leaguers and draft picks may still be moved. Minor Leaguers may still be added, promoted, and cut.
October 1st, 2007
- Major League Rosters Lock. No more cuts or adds. The team of players you end the season with will be the pool of players you can choose your keepers from.
- Minor League Keepers Lock. No more cuts or additions. All players no longer eligible as Minor League Keepers will be clearly marked and effectively promoted to the major league roster. They will then enter the pool of possible keepers.
- Trading once again allowed. Picks and Minor Leaguers will remain free to be traded and anyone on your active roster will as well.
- Draft Order will be set. League Champion takes last pick. Consolation Bracket Champion takes first pick (of preexisting owners). Any new owner gets 1st pick unless he opts to take that of the owner he replaces. Rest of the draft determined by reverse regular season standings.
December 3rd, 2007
- Keepers Declared. Each owner must designate his keepers (up to 5) and cut the remaining players on his roster.
Two week delay intended to leave room for any new owner(s) we might have to set their keepers. As well as allow time for me to get everything straight and deal with any lingering issues that may pop up.
December 17th, 2007
- Free Agent Period Begins. Any players not designated Keepers or drafted in the top 5 rounds in the 2007 draft will be eligible to be picked up and made a keeper at the cost of one existing keeper.
- A waiver order will be determined based on the regular season standings (reversed) and maintained here. All players will be placed on waivers on Dec 17th and owners will have 2 days to place a claim. Owner with the highest priority will win the claim. If noone claims a player he clears waivers and may be picked up by anyone at any time. If a player is cut he goes on waivers for 2 days.
February 4th, 2008
- Free Agent Period Ends. Any remaining waiver claims will be played out and only players eligible to move will be newly cut ones on waivers (Owner X drops Player A at deadline, Owner Y claims Player A and drops Player B who goes on waivers). If this situation persists waivers will be sped up.
- Franchise Players must be finalized (if being declared). An owner may designate 1 Keeper F1 (Keeper costs no pick) and 1 Keeper F2 (Keeper costs pick 1 round higher than where chosen last year). No further changes allowed, including players acquired in trade after this date.
- Draft Pick Penalties for Keepers will be worked out and Draft Order adjusted.
February 18th, 2008
- Draft Begins. Held here. Trades allowed to continue for all Keepers, Picks, Minor Leaguers, and Drafted players.
May 5th, 2008
- Minor League Keeper Draft. Order set randomly. Owners may use draft to fill any empty Minor League Keeper spots.
- Any Minor League player drafted in the March Draft and held on the Major League Roster to this date may be demoted to the Minor League Keeper list, in place of any chosen pick, presuming eligibility. No player added after the draft has the same option unless clearing waivers main roster waivers.
- After the Draft Minor League Keepers will again be allowed to be cut and added freely in accordance with waivers and eligibility requirements.
Like I said, this is just what I pulled together based on last year's schedule and any issues I saw. Any objections or suggestion, feel free to raise them here. We can discuss and adjust if necessary.
If you're curious about the timing there's no great methodology to it. Just a basic plan.
2 Months for Trading
2 weeks breather to set things right
2 Months for Free Agency
2 weeks breather to set things right
Draft
So dates can be changed if there's a reason. I just tried to (a) Make everything start on a Monday and (b) not stick phases too close together so I have to rush to do bookkeeping.
