I'm watching old WCW downloaded off the web. I started like 2 months ago at the Nitro Debut in Sept of '95. I'm watching shows mostly while I work and do other things so I can clue in when I care and clue out when I don't. I'm now up to February of '97. The nWo has had the title for 6 months, Piper beat Hogan a month ago, Souled Out just happened. Just things that occur to me.
I've always thought that the problem WCW took with the nWo was that they made it TOO strong and too big. And I still stand by that. But I'm actually surprised to see that 6 months in WCW actually doesn't look weak. The Giant defected from the nWo and Lex Luger has allied with him. Sting is in the rafters and has appeared to help Luger and Giant, and now he has Savage up there. DDP has rejected and attacked the nWo and is now a face in the war against them. Eddie just beat Syxx in a ladder match to get the US title. The Steiners beat the Outsiders for the Tag Titles but had them stripped by Bischoff (honestly, justifiably since a WCW ref came out of the crowd to count the pin at the nWo PPV when Nick Patrick was fucking them). And while he doesn't do a ton for me Piper beat Hogan clean. The Giant also had Hogan beat clean at Souled Out but Patrick again screwed the WCW guy. WCW actually has a strong force going against the nWo. Of course I know how this plays out and that Sting stays in the rafters too long, Savage jumps ship, Giant jumps back, Eddie falls aside, and everything gets dragged on too long until the nWo gets too big and unstoppable and basically win the war. But I am surprised to find that 6 months in WCW looks strong.
Souled Out was weird. On one hand it was dark and different. I remember orderin it back then and there was a cool vibe to it that wasn't in wrestling. It was like ECW with better production. There's this fairly cool opening where the nWo guys ride to the arena on the back of garbage trucks basically leading a parade through the snow yelling stuff, and then one of those snazzy quick cut MTV style videos with nWo guys talking trash while Bischoff holds a press conference. The set is all lit up weird and cool, wrestlers names get spelled out in light bulbs and the stage is a big lit staircase. That "new world order" voice from the entrance music and commercials does all the ring announcing and trash talks the WCW guys. Including randomly during the match. Oh, and Big Bubba runs Hugh Morrus over with a motorcycle.
But on the other side its some weird idea of what Bischoff thinks is cool and funny. For one, he's calling the PPV sitting on top of a milk crate. Because he's too cool for a chair. There's a Miss nWo contest being held that features these ugly as sin biker chicks, most of them over the age of 40 and one of them so old that she can't even hear the ridiculous Dating Game questions being asked by the completely nerdy random dude named "Jeff." And it all ends with Bischoff picking nowhere near the most attractive 40-year-old and making out with her. And there's this bizarre band performing that is just like industrial punk or something that has a lead singer wearing camos and a beret and while he sings about the "new world order" I'm starting to wonder if I'm watching a militant aryan band. And there are ugly and overweight hookers dancing in front of and behind screens and with Buff Bagwell.
Just weird.
Glacier sucks nuts.
Watching Benoit cuddle with Woman is a little creepy. And I say that as someone who had no problem watching him before he started cuddling with her and believes he can separate the art from the artist. But that's creepy.
