Well I admit these 3 hour Nitros are a burden. I'm watching most of this stuff while I work and do other things. It allows me to tune out for the stuff that doesn't matter, keep an eye on the stuff that's kinda interesting, and stop and watch (or pause it and watch when I get the chance) the stuff that I really want to see. Case in point, Mongo is wrestling Mike Enos on my video right now. Why in God's name would I want to watch that?
But in 1998 you're just watching wrestling. I mean, Mongo/Enos might suck but its not that bad or that long and who knows? It could lead somewhere. Or the match could surprise you. Whatever. Its wrestling. There's only so much wrestling available on TV and its new and fresh. New and fresh wrestling is full of potential. Its LIVE! Live is exciting! Mongo could have his greatest match ever! Maybe Stevie Ray will attack him and advance a Harlem Heat/Mongo&Benoit feud! Maybe Benoit will come out and tease the Horsemen again! Arn or Flair could return! nWo could attack! There could be a debut! Who knows?!
But I know nothing amazing happens so I'm fine to type up this post while Mongo and Enos clubber in the background and finish off to the predictable and uninteresting result. And now Raven's out with his Flock and it probably won't be much but maybe I'll pay a bit more attention. It could lead to something. But if the next match is Jericho & Eddie vs Malenko & Chavo I might have to pay attention and watch because it could be a good match.
But you can't rewatch that Monday Night Wars stuff and relive the fun. You're not watching on a Monday night with 2 live shows airing opposite of each other with 2 companies desperate to put on the more interesting show and an environment that had been filled with surprises and unbelievable things. You're not watching with friends and you're not going to talk about it at work or school tomorrow. You're not flipped back and forth to make sure you don't miss anything. There was a reason Thunder could be a better show than Nitro but less interesting. Just like how Smackdown can be better than RAW yet so many of us will still tune in tonight because its live and fresh and who knows what will happen? And that's without Nitro airing opposite and Vince actually WANTING to put on a great show.
And really, the only reason I can watch this stuff is because I have enough of it to really get the context and story. If I was just watching a random Nitro I might enjoy good matches or promos but I'd be scouring my memory or the internet for the stories and recent events and be bored as sin by most of it. Watch a few in a row and now I'm kind of into the story and I can follow along more.
Saturn told Raven he was done with him, the Flock attacked. Kanyon came out and the two fought off the Flock. When the ring was cleared they faced off and then parted. It was ok. Nothing special. Was probably more interesting roundabout at 8:45 PM Thursday night June 18th, 1998.
EDIT: The next match is Finlay vs Brad Armstrong. I'm watching it. I'm an Armstrong mark.
