When I was in college I was EXTREMELY lucky to only have roommates for a total of 2 semesters out of 3 1/2 years.
My first semester there I was stuck with a gal who somehow survived freshman RUSH and nearly died one night when the sorority told her to meet them out front with a bandana, a toothbrush and a bag of chips.... she came back to the room staggering drunk. puked a few times in the sink and passed out. We didn't talk odten, and when we did it was kinda strained. She moved into the sorority house that spring so I had the place to myself.
When I changed dorms the next year I had a roommate for all of a month. She, too, pledged to a sorority (and they were a LOT nicer to her than to my first roomie) and she moved out quietly. I had the place to myself, and managed to get a single room for the rest of my time.
Out of college, my bad luck came from roommates who would bring in someone else - usually a boyfriend or girlfriend. THEN the trouble starts.
One particular example was a male friend of mine who started dating a gal who was shorter than me, weighed over 300 lbs and cited all sorts of medical maladies. She claimed she was diabetic but every night she would be in the kitchen cooking greasy food and putting about a cup of salt on everything. She wasn't paying any bills and he was barely paying his, so I took my name off the lease and moved out. (turns out the complex didn't do their job and I ended up owing a month's rent after they were evicted).
Some years later I nearly lost my best friend when she decided to allow a guy she met on Everquest to move in with us. This is despite his family living 30 minutes away. For six months or so, all he ever did (that I could tell) was sit in our living room with the TV blasting and playing Gameboy. He was forbidden to use my computer (but I'm sure he did) and was never out looking for a job since he didn't have a car. Every time he asked me for a ride I told him "only if we stop someplace and you fill out an application" because he had no money in hand and no money coming in- so my friend had to be paying his share (and she didn't have the money to be doing that).
Things escalated to the point where I spoke to neither one of them because any conversation usually led to an argument and one nearly lead to a fistfight. That is the first time I'd EVER swung at someone in anger.
My last roommate situation happened after I'd moved to Ohio - a good friend of mine had given me a room at his house to stay til I got on my feet, and landed a good job so I could start looking for my own place. I was pretty close to that point when he started dating this redhead that everyone in our near group had trouble dealing with. She was a big "all eyes on me" and "Look at how great I am" kinda gal who ordered my friend around like she was his mother. She essentially forced me out of there because I couldn't stand her nonsense. It took him another six months to come around and kick her out since apparently HE could do no right in her eyes.
I've managed to be rooommate-free for almost four years now ;D
