In the 1940s, the Justice Society of America was formed by a group of men and women with extraordinary powers to combat an evil unlike anything the world has seen before. They fought along side the soldiers of the day, and when it was over were hailed as heroes. But, a new era soon came about, one of mistrust and paranoia, and the Society was forced to disband under threats and soon they were not seen again. The men and women of mystery vanishing as quickly as they appeared.
Since then a new generation has emerged, and with them new hero's, though only token efforts have been made to band together as a team. With no one to guide them on their experiences, these new crime fighters have become darker, harsher, and almost always act alone.
Michael Holt, one of the three smartest men on the planet, former college decathlete and volunteer at the Fair Play Club, is a researcher for TylerCo, working with Pat Dugan on harnessing cosmic radiation. Holt and Dugan have just finished perfecting the Cosmic Control Rod, which will allow them to gather up energies not scene since the dawn of time itself. The night after successfully testing the device for the first time, Dugan is found dead and the control rod stolen.
Investigating his friend’s life, and death, on his own Holt discovers Dugan was once involved with these masked men of the 40s, kept young through a previous exposure to the same radiation they were attempting to gather. Holt soon finds that the Control Rod was stolen by a nemesis from Dugan’s past, an immortal man known as Vandal Savage. He and his daughter, Scandal, plan to use the energies that the Control Rod can gather to wake and bring to heel an ancient warrior, Teth-Adam, and remake the world in his own image.
Unable to stop them alone, Holt seeks help from Dugan’s old friends. The three remaining hero’s that Holt could find are hesitant to help him, having all moved onto new lives and families. They also are embittered by a nation that turned its back upon them, Holt leaving with nothing more than information. Holt than turns to the new generation of vigilante’s, trying to find more luck there.
Saved from an encounter with Scandal Savage by Pat Dugan’s step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore (who is now in possession of a second device hidden by Dugan, the Cosmic Converter Belt) Holt meets little success with the unsociable hero’s of new, encountering people who want to help, but have no experience working with each other, though vowing to look into it on their own.
Can Holt and Whitmore survive in this bizarre world they’ve suddenly found themselves sucked into and find a way to bring hero’s of all generations together? If they cannot, than an unspeakable power will be loosed upon the world.
The next age of the Earth is soon to come, but will it be a golden age of heroics or a savage time of conquest?
Written by award winning writer J. Michael Straczynski and directed by Bryan Singer
