Cap sucks and Daredevil is very overrated. I've enjoyed Nightwing in the animated series, and I just found out how bad-ass The Green Lantern is via Wiki.

I think Cap also loses this one for me due to having one of the dumbest weopons ever (I'll be referring to this henceforth as the "Wonder Woman Has A Fucking Rope" principle). I mean c'mon, a sheild?!? It may help him out in the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 game, but it's still lame, nonetheless.

And gatorbait, I would completely concede that a shield is lame, if it was a regular metal shield--the Guardian's shield is lame--but Cap's shield is an alloy of adamantium and vibranium, which means nothing can break it and it absorbs (or reflects?) the kinetic energy of all impacts. In other words, the Hulk could pound on it all day, and it wouldn't hurt Cap a bit. Wouldn't you agree that's a useful thing to have for a superhero with almost no powers?

I can't believe DD is getting no love. I'll write up a big defense of him when I have a few minutes to devote to it. But I think it will primarily boil down to: Miller/Janson, Miller/Mazzuchelli. Come on, people!

It's not that I don't love DD - him becoming the new Kingpin was an awesome Holy Shit! moment - but he's going up against Green Lantern. It's the whole "iconic" thing coming into play again. I could write up a great defense of Matt Murdock and the life he's lead, but no freaking way can he beat a Green Lantern, much less the GL legacy.

Hey, I don't care. I just put Hawkeye there because I couldn't think of anyone else. How do you think Emma Frost made my list? I love Marvel. But I love Marvel teams and crossovers. For individuals its all about DC.

When you decide that Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Punisher, Hulk, Daredevil, and Wolverine all kind of bore you you run out of Marvel guys to vote on.

Now give me a Marvel list of villains, teams, or duos and I'll load it up. But half of Marvel is about a team of people fighting 1 villain. DC's Justice League is just a pantheon of DC's best heroes. That ain't the case for the Avengers, FF, Defenders, or X-Men. Although Defenders were pretty bad ass.

This is the hardest one for me.

I like DD and GL, and they're both high on my list for completelly different reasons. DD is the grown man's Spider-Man of Marvel, the underground Spidey, if you will. GL is one of the elite guardians of the universe. Hal and Guy are both great characters as is Kilowog! Icon-wise, GL wins hands down. But I DD is the fucking man. Kevin Smith's DD was THE comic book that got me to start reading comics again, and I still collect DD to this very day. And also, he's blind guy who has fucked The Black Widow.

I also like Cap and Nightwing. And yes, Captain America is so much more iconic than Nightwing. but Nightwing is special. He went from being Batman's sidekick to one of the most kick-ass guys in the DC Universe. And STILL with no powers! He went from wearing green panties to fucking half of the female DC roster. But it's CAPTAIN FUCKING AMERICA. He COMMANDS respect in the Marvel Universe. He's Spider-Man's favorite hero! And we all know that Civil War wouldn't be shit if it wasn't Captain America leading the rebels. If it was anyone else, this story wouldn't be nearly as fun as it is. That's how important he is.

I think if you have two guys who stack up as evenly as GL and DD (at least sal thinks so) it comes time to compare how good their books have been. What were your favorite GL stories? The Wein/Gibbons years? Engelhart/Staton? Owsley/Bright's take on John Stewart? Jones/Broderick (with the Mr. Fantastic hair?)? Giffen/Bright redoing the origin? Or (god help us) are you a fan of the Kyle years?

Do any of those teams' work really stack up next to Miller/Janson? Or Miller/Mazzuchelli? I'd say Owsley and Bright's stuff might be as good as Nocenti/JRJR's run on DD, but I have a real soft spot for Owsley and Bright.

Captain America is the Mark Messier of superheroes. He's the leader. People follow him because of his presence. He's simply the man.

DD's getting my vote mainly because I feel bad for the character after the Affleck debacle. Which may or may not have ever actually happened.

I didn't mean to disrespect Cap. He's grandpa. You respect and love the man to no end. You do what he says and if he's still able to go you always let him pitch or QB or direct the move or hand out the tools whatever. He deserves that. You listen to his stories and love every minute of it.

But Nightwing is you totally cool older brother/cousin. His girlfriends have always been absurdly hot. He was cool even when he was kind of dorky. He can show you a good time but is never coming up plastered and vomiting. He's just the coolest dude. And his friends were cool. And his girlfriends were not only the hottest but they were cool as hell too. And he had that one girl who was the coolest who he clearly loved and treated great and acted like he didn't deserve her.

Of course grandpa had some pretty hot girls too. That's only fair.

In all seriousness, I've never understood the derision Kyle has gotten from some comics fans. I find it usually comes from the older fans who didn't hate Kyle, per se, but were bent that DC turned Hal into a bad guy.

Younger people, on the other hand, tend to regard Hal as an old duffer who was a great silver age hero but doesn't really fit now. Which could account why the "rebirth" of Hal hasn't gone as spectacularly as planned.

Well, that, and the convoluted way they did the rebirth was pretty disappointing. The Parallax-as-an-evil-entity-inside-the-power-battery was a retcon struggling so hard not to be a retcon and not quite pulling it off.

I agree about Hal. But he had two backups sitting right there. But instead they tried to get us to buy into a brand new character with a really UGLY costume. The Toon JL had the right idea about who the new GL should have been.

But even if you're a fan of Kyle, what I was really asking with that post is: would you say that your favorite GL comics--whether they feature Kyle, Hal, John, or Guy--can really even be reasonably compared to the best DD comics?

I liked Kyle's original costume. it was a redo that paid slight homage to the original without being lame (you want lame? Look at the Titans East costumes in the "The Future is Now" Titans storyline. Blech). It also has that artistic flair that marked Kyle's ring creations.

Do my favorite GL comics compare to DD? Pre-Bendis and Smith, yes. I'd take those GL comics over much of the DD storylines. Sorry, but Miller never did it for me. The newer storylines of DD, though, rock. To go further - I'd take DD over not only GL but over most other books any day. I'm a HUGE Batman fan, but I'd rather read most of Bendis' story arcs instead of War Games any day.
