If you were to be in a cover band, which of these songs would you want to tackle first - and why?

INXS - Suicide Blonde

Depeche Mode - Strange Love

The Cure - Just Like Heaven

Of the 3 I'd do Suicide Blond....but I'd go deeper/elsewhere into INXS' catalogue and pick something from there as opposed to that song as the first one done.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I'm taking "cover" to be "perform live" as opposed to "commercially produce it and have it appear on a CD or what not".

Guitar-oriented stuff is fun to play and fun to hear live. Something that's stronger on keyboards...not so much. Suicide Blond has some decent guitar stuff in it. The other two - not so much.

But if I could open it up beyond that song....I'd go with something like "The Messenger" or "The Gift" both off "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts".

Well, me and the keyboardist of the band I'm in (cheap plug link) want to do a cover band on the side. We'll perform live (she'll sing and if there's keyboards, she'll play them - I'll play bass and do background vocals). No recording. We're mostly sticking with pop/rock singles, fun shit to play at bars and parties, so no digging deep. Otherwise, I'd probably pick from INXS "Stay Young" or "Mystify", The Cure "Fascination Street" or "Hanging Garden" or "One Hundred Years", and with Depeche Mode... to be honest, I like their singles the best.

Maybe instead of "Just Like Heaven" we should do "Why Can't I Be You". That one's more fun.


anyways, so far there are three of us (we need a guitarist) and this week we're each picking a song for all of us to learn. the singer picked "Karma Chameleon". The drummer is picking "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (which would've been my pick, but that's ok - it's like I get two picks!). These three songs just popped up in my head today.

Agree w/ Solly - that was pretty damn good!

I'm with you on Depeche Mode singles. "Just Can't Get Enough" remains at or near the top of their stuff for me...and might be a decent one to cover.

As for the Cure, "In Between Days" is fun....as is your suggested "Why Can't I Be You".

And if you have to go more popular with INXS....."Don't Change"?

And the lineup you have is very conducive to Human League stuff (bass, synth, male & female vocals....)

I love Don't Change, but I actually don't think it's that popular anymore.

Actually "Need You Tonight" and "New Sensation" would be fun, too. Suicide Blonde, though, is such a fun song, and our singer/keyboardist is blonde, so...

Actually, I DO want to add "Don't You Want Me Baby" at some point. But I also want to play a Pearl Jam song at some point, too.

Which Pearl Jam song, is the question...

Please don't do Ledbetter. There are certain things that simply shouldn't be covered.

I'd suggest Leash, Love Boat Captain, Marker in the Sand, State of Love and Trust, and Red Mosquito. If you feel bluesy, 1/2 Full is awesome too.

First, I'd much rather go with "classic" PJ rather than anything in the last 4 albums. I like the last 4 albums - the new one is great - but outside of "Worldwide Suicide" "Do the Evolution" and "Last Kiss" (which wasn't on any of those albums), songs from those albums are nearly unknown outside of Pearl Jam fans.

Evenflow - I have no problem with it, but it's far from one of my favorite PJ songs.
Jeremy- an absolute no-no. The cover band is meant to be fun. We're not looking to sing serious songs. (Ok, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a serious song, but the tone of the music is upbeat)

Well, there's a problem. I just ruled out 2 "classics" already. I love "Alive" but I don't think I would do it. And I don't think our singer could pull off "Black".

Courderoy - Unlikely
Dissident - Possibly
Betterman - I never was a big fan of the song
Ledbetter - I love this song, but I want to stay away from slow songs.
Leash, Love Boat Captain, Marker In The Sand, Red Mosquito - unknown outside of Pearl Jam fans. That's not the point of this cover band idea. Also, Marker in The Sand is too new. No songs in the last 5 years (except for certain major exceptions)**
State of Love and Trust - My favorite Pearl Jam song. I'd love to do that. It's not very mainstream but it's "classic PJ" to me and it's a fun song. While it was never really a single, it's probably better known outside of Peral Jam fans than, say, Courderoy.



**(The one huge exception is that I REALLY want to cover "Feel Good Inc" from Gorillaz.)

You're prob on overkill with ideas/suggestions, but on plane last night Iggy Pop's "Candy" came up on my iPod and my first thought was "great cover song for Sal....."
