I came into this thinking a generic "kid's show showdown" would work, but that was based on how I was defining "kid's shows". My framework was for the most part (1) what did I used to watch growing up on Saturday morning as a kid, and (2) what is my kid watching now.

However, it's obvious in looking at the votes that there are pretty significant differences in approach, some driven by age (I have stuff from early/mid 70's...), some by location (Canada/US), and some by definition of what a kid's show is (is Ren/Stimpy a kid's show? That's a hypothetical/not meant to drive debate, but merely to point out one example of something that may be considered "kids" by some and "non-kids" by others). And there is no right or wrong way to approach this..but there are differences based on these and other factors.

So I see a couple options here. Both of these require more work for the facilitator, and since loki appears to be game to this, I'll volunteer to help him in any way he needs it (behind the scenes, tag-team, help when and as needed, etc) if we go down one of these or similar routes:

1) Expand to 32 and run with what we've got, subject to a round of feedback/changes based on loki's original post. We embrace the divergence and just go.

2) We bring a little more structure here and run multiple showdowns, with the winners of each advancing to face each other. In looking at submittals, I think "cartoons vs. live action" is still too broad, especially in the cartoon area. I'm seeing possibly 4 brackets: live action, classic cartoons (pre ~1975 or pick a date), modern cartoons (wherever classic leaves off until present), and adult cartoons. 8 per category, so 32 overall. Doesn't have to be these exact 4 - but hopefuly you get the gist.


That's my thinking based on what I've seen here. I submit this not to be prescriptive on what we should do but to simply throw out possible alternatives for reaction and/or other suggestions.

I didn't watch very much TV as a kid (Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow, and a lot of Sesame Street is foreign to me). But I loved Pinwheel! Think of it as Sesame STreet for Nickelodeon.

Everyone -

I'm thinking Gator was right about splitting this showdown into at least two categories. So saying, I'm splitting it into at least live action vs. cartoons (note: for categories sake, the Muppets is being thrown into live action).

Tex suggested we also split them up by era. We have mature people like me and Tex who fondly remember Transformers and GI Joe, and we have younguns like Ryan and DevSop* who think the cartoon world begins and ends with the Powderpuff Girls.

However, breakdown-wise the top nine are all older cartoons. I don't see a real need to break them down by era, but am willing to go along with the majority if you all disagree.



*Okay, that's enough DevSop-as-Ryan jokes for now

I'm all for the 2 categories: live action and cartoon. It'll be easier to run, plus even though we could further break out the cartoon one...and I still think that could be expored...we then get into the hair splitting of what is "classic" vs. newer, etc etc. Simplicity is good. Live action vs. cartoons gets my vote.

I have one more suggestion. Perhaps instead of just basing the seeding on number of nominations, you might want to use a rank-point system like Tex used in the previous showdowns. In other words, the 1st-ranked item on a nomination ballot would get eight points, and the 8th ranked item would get one point.

I think this system helps reflect not just how many nominators liked something, but how strongly they feel about it. For example, if we had just counted votes, Flash would have been DC's 2nd seed behind Batman, with nine nominations versus Superman and GL's eight. But Flash was 4th seed behind Superman and GL, with only 33 rank-points versus Superman's 55.

Just something to consider.
