I imagine this could be a buzzsaw, so I'm going to make a pre-emptive strike for Knives, my favorite character in a top-30 movie for me.

I love Airplane. I think it is one of the best long-form sketches to become a movie. "Don't Call Me Shirley" is a dad joke but the movie manages to even make dad jokes iconic. But. There are no great characters in Airplane, only great jokes.

The best comedy, especially comedy movie, characters have heart. That's why so many characters from the Princess Bride are moving forward - they're characters with heart, not just vessels for gags and jokes. I doubt everyone watched Scott Pilgrim, but Knives is the hero of the story. If not for Ellen Wong, that could have felt forced, a tack-on feminism after a terribly un-feminist movie, but Ellen makes you root for Knives throughout. In a movie about stunted childish adults, she's an actual child who matures into an adult, and manages to hit close to home for anyone who was ever a stupid lovesick millennial teenager.

Rumack makes me laugh. Knives does not. This tournament is about who makes you laugh. C'mon Rumack, we're all counting on you.
