Here's a conversation I had with my wife, prompted by the recent dispute about how well-known the Hulk is.

"Hey, honey, name all of the superheroes you can think of."

"Well, Superman and Batman, Spiderman, does the Hulk count as a superhero?"

"Fair enough question, he does seem more like a monster."

"Let's see most of these are from Super-friends: I already said Superman, Batman, and Robin, then there's Aquaman. Oh, and Captain America. And then there's that one that you geeks seem to think is such a big deal, but no-one else has heard of. The Green something?"

"Green Lantern."

"Yeah, him I've sort of heard of, but I have no idea what his deal is. Is he human, or an alien, is he superfast?--I don't know. Oh, and Wonder Woman. That's all I can think of. The Wonder Twins don't count, do they? I know they're aliens, though."

"Are you sure you can't think of any others?" (Trying to prompt for Wolverine, since I know she saw the first two X-Men movies.)

"Oh, yeah, they had a big movie recently: The Fantastic Four."

I asked the 70+ year old lady who works in my department. Her chuckled respone was 'Beyond Superman I can't think of any".

I love that she lists the "Fabulous" Four's powers as "rock, water, fire, and stretching". You know ... all the elements.

And Green Hornet WAS a comic hero. He was also (first?) a radio show in the '30s-'50s. In the '60s it got a TV show and Bruce Lee was his sidekick Kato. You don't know Green Hornet?

I also like how his coworkers make no distinction between superheroes and supervillians.

Some of those seemed weird at first, but then I'd remember when that character had mass-market exposure. Like, "Why would a non-fan have ever heard of Oracle? Oh, yeah, Birds of Prey--forgot about that."
