I'm torn on this one... In general I don't like the idea of a team being able to essentially "out-volume" another team in order to win a playoff series. Which is not hard to do with the non-scoring stats like PIM, face-offs, shots, hits, blocks, etc. if you're just going to add / drop 3 or 4 guys every day. Yes, both teams are technically allowed to do this, but to me the advantage is given to the inferior team. It's a much tougher decision for a better team that has more potential keepers on the line, and not just a bunch of replaceable players who can be dropped without much thought.

I do like that the extended waiver period on players in the playoffs does help make this a bit more difficult to do since it thins out the available pool a bit, but again there's never a shortage of guys out there for those secondary stats.

So I guess I am in favor of keeping a cap. Not sure if 7 is the right number, maybe it is. Or maybe it can be flexed based on the number of days in the round. (Since the finals is typically longer than 7 days, maybe make the cap equal to the number of days within that round.) Or something.

You say inferior team, but if that’s been their strategy all season and they’ve made the playoffs doing that, changing the rules at that point just strikes me as wrong. I understand there sometimes has to be a slight change to rules between regular seasons and playoffs, but this isn’t a slight change…it’s a totally new rule only instituted for playoffs. If we’re going to play that way, we may as well just move to a weekly lineup and not have daily transactions because limiting transactions is basically forcing a set lineup instead of using the daily lineups as a strategy.

If we insist on a number of transactions, I’d go double the transactions for # of days in the matchup (14 transactions for 7 day matchup) and I’d probably be willing to settle at 1.5 times (10 transactions for 7 days, 20 for 14 days).

To be honest, I don't like that there isn't a cap during the regular season either, but I'm not going to push for it. I would be in favor of having one there too. (We have one in the Pies league.)
To me, having a weekly transaction cap is not even close to the same thing as doing something like weekly lineups. There still needs to be flexibility to account for things like midweek injuries, and I don't like a weekly waiver period where everyone is trying to make their moves at the same time for all the same players each week.
I love making roster moves and I do my fair share throughout the season, but my opinion is that it devalues the draft if someone's strategy is to just make 20 moves a week and win on pure volume of starts.
To me, the draft is the single biggest testament to whether someone is good at this game, and I don't like anything that takes away from that focus. Yes, trades and add/drops are important and in the end can push a team over the top, but it can be done without making it the primary strategy.

Anyway that's just my opinion on roster moves in general. I totally get the point of not wanting different rules for regular season and playoffs, and I mostly agree. But I feel strongly enough about a cap in the playoffs that I've been content to just live with it during the season.

OK. So four people commented. I'll add my comment that this isn't a perfect solution, but it's better than nothing. I'm going to go with Dev's suggestion of bumping it up from 7 to 10 per playoff matchup as a slight tweak.

Also - to clarify - I believe this was the first year in a while that we had a playoff matchup that was longer than one week. I even congratulated Collins prematurely, as I thought the matchup was done! In past years the Finals lasted exactly one week. I'll try to keep an eye on it, and see if that's something we can adjust. We have always avoided the final NHL week if possible because so many NHL players are rested because their team has locked in their playoff seed, or their team has been eliminated and they want to protect a player with nagging injuries.

If we get more comments throughout the year, we can have a bigger discussion next summer about both regular season and playoff transactions.
