Daredevil: The Devil, Inside and Out Vols. 1 & 2



many people may have read that long bendis run on daredevil. i did not, and that's important to this recommendation. it's important because many people may think you'd have needed to read bendis' run to know what's going on in this run by ed brubaker (the man who killed captain america). the fact is, you don't. all you need to know from bendis' run is that daredevil's identity had been revealed (but not proven), and that matt murdock ended up in jail as a result.

the very intimidating 10 trades worth of story that brought him there are NOT necessary reading to jump on at this point (a point further driven home that this trade is called "Vol. 1" and not "Vol. 14").

Vol. 2 just came out this week and these books have just been a joy to read. ed brubaker is fast becoming one of my favorite writers. matt murddock in jail is some rough shit. especially when in the same jail is kingpin, hammerhead, and FRANK CASTLE.

pick these 2 trades up boys. it's a good'un.

You haven't read Bendis' DD run? I'm surprised.

Speaking as someone who did read the Bendis run, it was top notch. The grainy art took a bit to get used to, but the run itself was fantastic. Bendis crafter a page turner where the reader had no idea what was going to happen next. Very engrossing reading.

I planned on reading the Brubaker run anyway. From what I've read of Brubaker in the past I assume his run is as good as the previous volumes.

yeah. never read the bendis stuff. the david mack run between kevin smith and bendis just didn't do it for me. david mack is a good artist, and he's a hell of a lot of fun to party with, but i'm not a big fan of his writing. so after falling off during the mack run, it was pretty deep into the bendis run that i learned that it was awesome. i just never ended up reading it.

and while bendis' run is meant to be awesome, it's just TOO MUCH and i think it would deter a more casual reader from picking it up. where as this brubaker run is just 2 trades at this point and you're all caught up.

Yeah, it is a bit much for the average fan. But you're not Joe Average Fan, and I think it would be worth your while to read through it.

DD v8 (Echo Quest) is the one you're thinking of, I think. If that is it, you can skip it. It doesn't really add anything to the Bendis arc. You can go from V7 to v9 without any problems.

no, it's v2 i'm talking about. volume 1 is the kevin smith run, volume 3 starts the bendis run, volume 2 is written and drawn by david mack. that's where i turned off.

Well, I finally picked this up. It's awesome. I wasn't sure if I was going to continue following DD after Bendis's run finished, until I finally got around to reading the last book. He set things up with such a perfect cliffhanger--DD is in prison with his greatest foes, and the FBI hopes they all kill eachother!--I just had to know what happened next, even if someone new would be telling the story.

It's different from Bendis--faster paced--but it works. I'm still hooked. Matt Murdock in prison is absolutely great.

I was sorry that he was already out at the end of Book 1, I was enjoying it so much. Then again, his stay in the pen was so perfect, trying to extend it further probably would have been a letdown.

I loved the way they kept ratcheting up the tension. "You thought Matt was in an explosive situation locked up in the same prison with Kingpin? How about we add Bullseye? How about Punisher, too?"

I loved the way Punisher got into Ryker's; just kill a pimp in front of a police officer, then surrender. So f-in' cool.

I am such a sucker for Bullseye. I really think he combines all of the best aspects of Joker, Slade, and Deadshot. And those are three of my other favorite villains.

And Book 2 is out, too? I'll have to drop by the comic store again and pick that up too.

OK, I picked up vol 2. What a huge let-down! It just did not live up to the promise of the first part at all. It just felt like the word came down to bring the book back to the status-quo as quickly as possible.

That's one of the dangers of buying the collections--I would have dropped this book by two or three issues in, for sure.
