Anyone know how to repair PS2's? I've got one that won't read the discs I put in it. It started out not reading DVDs, which was fine, since I had another DVD player... but now it won't read game discs either. It's been so long since I've hooked it up, that I don't remember what the error was that came up. But any advice or websites or offers of help to fix it would be appreciated.

To be honest, it'd probably be cheaper to just buy a used one somewhere.

You have to open it up and clean the lens. It's a pretty easy process and there's tutorials for it all over the web.

Mine had a clicking sound when you put in a disc last year, almost like a baseball card in bicycle spokes. Read discs fine, but was just annoying as hell. Took it apart, cleaned the thing inside, put it back together and it's been fine ever since. I didn't click the link Gimmick posted, but I presume it's the same thing I did.

Haha. picked up the wrong screwdriver set at Wal-mart. I got the right ones now (just fyi, you'll need the really tiny screwdrivers (like the #0 and #1 Philips head). I thought a nice small screwdriver would have worked. I'll report back tomorrow. :-)

Unfortunately, I followed the directions to the tee, and my PS2 still won't read discs. I think it might be because it was in storage for over 2 years as well. Ah well... I guess it's about time for us to upgrade to a PS3 anyhow.

The same thing happened to me awhile back, and I sent it back to Sony to the tune of a $40 repair charge and shipping. If it's still not working, I think that's your option if you don't want to fork over for a PS3.

Will they touch it if it's been opened, like I had to with the instructions given above? I know it kills any warranty Sony might offer, but will they work on an opened machine if you're paying them for it?

I had the same problem and adjusting the gear helped, at least temporarily. I've gone through a few and once it gets to this point it's simply prolonging the inevitable replacement of the system.
