I was over a friends watching it and we were all shocked at the result. We all thought Rampage had the fight won at worst 3 rounds to 2. To hear that one of the judges had it 4-1 for Griffin and one had it 3-2 for Griffin with a 10-8 round blew our mind. Seriously we all thought that besides the second when Griffin totally buckled one of Jackson's legs that Quinton was a lot cleaner with all his strikes and seemed to dominate most of the stand-up exchanges.
It should lead to an awesome rematch though. That division is absolutely STACKED though so who knows with Liddell, Wanderlei, Evans, and now Anderson jumping up to that class.
The rest of the show was pretty meh except for the obscene amount of blood that Lytle lost in his fight with Koschek.
First some non-main event commentary and thoughts. Stevenson/ Tibau had the most beautiful and perfect guillotine choke I've ever seen. And that fuckin' Josh Koscheck kid is the first person I've been really truly proud to have come from my wonderful little town: sweet home Fresno. He caused a Mortal Kombat amount of blood to come out of Chris Lytle. We got the college world series and the bloodiest match in UFC all year both within a week of each other. Eat it Boston. Fresno just stole the sports limelight.
Joe Rogan commented on it, but Rampage got some bad fuckin' corner advice before Round 5. They clearly told him he had the fight and to stay back in the last round and he quite obviously didn't. He should have attacked like a motherfucker in that round but he laid off and it cost him the title.
That fuckin' round 4 was outstanding. It contained no less than 2 triangle chokes, 1 gogoplata and a powerbomb.
Did anyone notice that they didn't show who was in Forrest's corner the entire time? Here's a little fun fact: that's because Randy Couture was his cornerman. Its really funny to me that Randy's little spat with Dana White has gotten to the point where he can't even be shown in the corner on a PPV.
By the way, if Rampage powering out of the triangle choke with a strait legit powerbomb isn't the most badass thing you've seen in UFC this year, then I don't know what to tell you.
And yes, before anyone says anything, I am blatantly aware that this was not Jackson's first, and certainly not his best powerbomb escape he's ever done. Here's the legendary end of the Rampage Jackson/Ricardo Arona fight from '04.
I guess this is just another example of "I just don't get it" when it comes to MMA. Because aside from the fourth round, that entire Jackson/Griffin fight was boring as fuck to me.
Okay! So who's excited for UFC 87? Eh? Eh? Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch will certainly be the highlight, but Crazy Horse Herring's takin' on this new kid. Perhaps you guys have heard of him. His name is Brock and he's made out of brawn, steel and bad decision-making skills. Should be a good one!
