Preview: And Then There Were Five

Last week’s ECW proved to be a whirlwind of announcements, upsets, and explosive interruptions.

At the top of the broadcast, ECW General Manager Armando Estrada announced a Singapore Cane Match for One Night Stand, pitting former ECW Champions John Morrison, CM Punk, Chavo Guerrero and Tommy Dreamer against each other. During a pay-per-view preview Tag Team Match involving the four Superstars, former ECW Champion Big Show suddenly smashed his way through the four Superstars and into One Night Stand. Will Big Show create more havoc in the Land of The Extreme leading up to Out Night Stand?

Colin Delaney earned his second victory, with the help of his tag team partner Kelly Kelly. But, his luck ran out at the bell when Estrada reemerged to give the newest ECW Superstar his second consecutive extreme beat down. Will Delaney have the inner strength to continue? How many of Estrada’s attacks will he have to endure?

WWE Tag Team Champion The Miz set out to show that even though he was not a former ECW Champion, he was still a force to be reckoned with when he defeated ECW Champion Kane by disqualification. What affect will this have on the Big Red Machine?

While maybe Heat had some surprisingly good matches... at least ECW has the most interesting wrestlers.
ECW too under appreciated...

crap, i forgot to put a recap place-holder.... oh well...

Match 1: Big Show v. Tommy Dreamer

Even if Dreamer wasn't the generic whipping boy for ECW, the size difference alone would telegraph the outcome of this. Tommy does get some kicks to the knees in that take Big Show down, but it's temporary, as Big Show stops Tommy mid-air as he leaps off the turnbuckle. Chokeslam to Dreamer, and we're done. Winner: Big Show

Shelton Benjamin joins the announce table. They discuss the end of Kofi Kingston's unbeaten streak.

Match 2: Kofi Kinsgton v. Mike Knox

Kofi has pyro now? And at least they're mixing up the same 14 wrestlers, but anything that keeps Mike Knox in the line up is just not good enough for me. At various points, chat was way more interesting than the match, so I'll watch it again later. Shelton keeps alternating between first and third person when talkingabout himself. Kofi does do this neat thing where he's in the corner, and Knox comes in for a splash. Kofi kicks his two legs between the middle and top rope, so he's sitting on the middle rope, and then flips his legs up so he's upside down, but kicks Knox in the face. And we get BLOOD! Unplanned blood, I believe. Kofi hits the finisher. Winner: Kofi Kingston

As Knox staggers out of the ring, Shelton runs in and a street fight ensues. They brawl a bit, then Knox comes back in to lay out Kingston.

Match 3: Chavo Guerrero w/Bam Neely v. CM Punk w/Briefcase

Punk tries to hit the GTS like his second move. Other than that, it was a pretty entertaining match, high energy, until Chavo gets a rest hold on CM Punk and we fade to commercials. When we return, Punk has lofted Chavo out of the ring, and the referee is doing the ten-count. As he tries to get back in, Punk tries to launch himself off the ropes, but Bam pulls the rope down so Punk sails out. Now the ref has to do another 10 count. Chavo frogsplashes from the top rope onto Punk.

Both men eventually get back into the ring. I lost interest again. The crowd boos Chavo for doing Eddie's shoulder-shimmy!! Chavo does the three amigos....more boos. But wait!! he doesn't get the third one! Punk sets him up for GTS take 2, but Chavo counters again into a hurricanrana! Some more back and forth, and Chavo dodges as Punk speeds towards the turnbuckle. Punk goes high, Chavo goes low, and then reaches up for the roll up. Winner: Chavo Guerrero

Lena Yada asks Colin Delaney what he thinks about Mr. McMahon's million-dollar give away and the upcoming draft. This is as bad as you can possibly imagine it was.

Match 4 Handicap Match: John Morrison and his abs/The Miz v. Kane

Morrison comes to the announce table and picks up the kendo stick that's been sitting there for 'no reason' all night. He hits the announce table with it. And, for those keeping score, Kane's pyro goes off before the match.

Fairly standard match -- again, chat was more interesting -- but then Punk and Chavo come in for a pre-PPV cluster fuck. Finally, Big Show wanders in and cleans house. Except he turns around and there is KANE! (GREAT camera angle on this. You didn't actually see Kane until Big Show moved just slightly.) Kane and Big Show come face to face....and then we are done! Winner: No One.

I don't know what amused me more. That WWE over dubbed the highlight of Morrison's win to make it sound like his name was "John Morrison" instead of "Johnny Nitro"... Or that with ECW owned by him and Taz retired Vince STILL won't allow us to see Dreamer win the ECW title.

WWE is a bizarre fucking company. The shit they'll do for no apparent reason.

I wonder what Tommy's winning percentage has been in the WWE. The guys we think of as jobbers, like Val Venis, once had pushes, so Dreamer may have the lowest winning percentage since they got rid of the true jobbers. Of course, he had a low winning percentage in ECW, but he was so over then it didn't matter. His ECW run hasn't exactly erased the memory of Undertaker abusing him into eating/drinking disgusting stuff.

Shelton Benjamin doing color was hilarious. The best comment was when he compared Kofi to "monkey man" from the movie Bloodsport. You could hear the crickets chirping next to Tazz and Adamle. Now that was comedy!!
