Ummmm, I'm not much of a MMA Smarty or anything, but I gotta assume that this Elite XC Event on CBS didn't go over very well. I'm pretty much a MMA novice so maybe Gimmick or Thai or somebody can set me straight:
- A 1 minute fight - A 1 minute fight - A cool chick fight that got stopped between rounds. Although the fight was pretty much over. - A great (to me) title bout brawl that got stopped 1 minute into a 5 minute injury timeout. I thought the dude got 5 minutes to recoup after a thumb to the eye? - And wasn't Steve Smith an Ultimate Fighter jobber? And he took it to the champ? Is that right? - Kimbo Slice ground game looking like crap (besides escapes) and that English dude reminding me of R.E. Rodgers having a Sloth ear that shoulda prevented him from fighting. That ear looked like it was a slap away from busting open. And was it the right slap punch or the left scrape punch that fucked it umm, off? - A couple fights (I thought) ended prematurely, but Slice can get pounded for a minute and a half against the cage and it's ok. Is this shit fixed? - I keep forgetting that Gus Johnson is black.
I don't know much about MMA, but Dana has to be laughing his face off for a few days, right?
Yeah this had to be a bit of a disappointment. Not much you can do about the one minute fights, but stopping two fights really seemed to piss the crowd off, and really just made them look bad, especially the title fight, that one was really kind of bullshit. And the Slice fight was fun, but he really didn't look very good. It will be interesting to see what kind of ratings this drew, I was going to watch all of it, but I ended up watching more of the hockey game. I would think this probably did pretty well. What will determine the future of MMA on network tv would be the ratings for the second special. After all, didn't the first XFL games draw monster ratings?
The Phillies are everything I hoped the Mets would be - a team that plays their fucking asses off for all 27 outs. They're never out of a game. Solly 10/20/09
After all, didn't the first XFL games draw monster ratings?
I believe the first night drew a 12, which is really insane considering how it ended up just weeks later.
I was so excited for this I forgot it was on - I turned it on in time for the last fight with the bullshit eyepoke finish. But hey, if a match goes to a no finish, give the fans a rematch. Works for Vince McMahon... kinda.
I'd forgotten it was on until about an hour or so in, and turned it on right when the chicks started fighting... and I thought their's was the best fight I saw.
I don't really know much about MMA either, so the only thing I really have left to add is-- the ear on that dude that Kimbo fought was fucking disgusting.
Lawler/Smith was a little better than the Gina Carano fight, but the total bullshit ending really ruined it. And to call Smith an UFC jobber is somewhat accurate, but also not fair to some degree. Smith is a good MMA fighter, he's just not world-class and UFC is world-class, EliteXC is not...yet. And if they continue to spotlight Kimbo Slice and Phil Baroni-types, they never will be.
The only time I've ever seen Smith was on the Ultimate Fighter and I think he lost. I've never seen any other fights that he had been in, but he looked great in that one against their champ.
Is it so hard to imagine? Is it so hard to believe? Something so outrageous, something so far-fetched, well how 'bout Adam and Eve?
