I call bullshit!

LOS ANGELES – The Appalachian State football team lost out to the New York Giants at the ESPY awards Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers were nominated for the biggest upset of 2007 by virtue of their win over Michigan last September. But the Giants' win over the unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, was picked as the biggest upset.

The ESPYs, an awards show put on by ESPN, will air on ESPN Sunday at 9 p.m.

I realize that the Giants win was big. But upsets happen in the NFL all the time. A Division I-AA team does not go into the Big House and beat Michigan. Nothing like that has ever happened! Kornheiser and Wilbon called it the biggest sports upset EVAR! Although, I think the Miracle on Ice was the biggest, this is right up there. I think the Michigan fans rigged the vote!

sadly, in the eyes of most sports fans NFL > NCAA. I think that is bullshit, but thats how a lot of folks feel. That said, I agree that App got screwed, that was the biggest upset in football history, not just college, pros too.

Michigan just wasn't good last year though. Had they not gotten ripped by Oregon the following week, the upset would've been a little more, I don't know the word I'm looking for here... authentic? Fact is, they played one good game last year, and that was the Cirtus Bowl where they beat the OMG~ULTIMATE WARRIOR. Had ASU trumped Michigan when the Wolverines were 10-0 with the Buckeyes in their sights the following week, my guess is that App State gets the nod here. But everything that had happened leading up to the Super Bowl - spygate, the fuck you TD's, 18-0, Eli Manning becoming a credible QB - is what put it over the top.

All that being said, a team winning a game 14-10 a month after losing 35-28 or whatever it was to the same team doesn't really resonate with me. It's not like the Russians coming into MSG and putting the beats on the U.S. 10-3 a week before the Olympics.

They're both incredible upsets and truthfully, I don't think it's fair to compare the two.

Damn, beat me to it. I was just about to post pretty much the exact same thing. Totally agree though. Had App State come in and beaten Michigan in the middle of the season, it wouldn't have been nearly as big of an upset. It was only such a big deal because it was the first game and people still thought the Wolverines might be good.

I'd say no, because that just reaffirms the fact that, hey, App State's pretty good... as opposed to "who the fuck are these guys?"

Besides, the big upset in college football this year is gonna be when Troy goes into the Horseshoe and stuns Ohio State the week after the Buckeyes go to L.A. and defeat Southern Cal. TRAP GAME!!

Yup - if the Pats were 14-4 instead of 18-0, App State might have gotten the nod. I think HOW the Pats lost (Eli avoiding the sack, Tyree catching it against his helmet) also played into the voting. Still you're talking about the most-watched TV show of the year vs. a game in September. The Super Bowl is NOW~!

If the Pats were 17-1 rather then 18-0 App gets the nod with ease. I'm a Giants fan and I'm torn even at 18-0 which is the greater upset. I think the Giants had a better chance to win then App State going in so techincally that is a bigger upset but the Giants win stopping a 19-0 season is going to gather a lot of attention. Add to that the cities involved are New York and Boston and anybody reasonably can see why it was chosen. You don't have to agree but you should be able to see the answer.

Clearly a Division 1-AA (or Championship Subdivision or whatever) team going into Ann Arbor to a banged out Big House against a Michigan Team who desperately needed to win; and came out to not just play close and scare Michigan, but WIN OUTRIGHT. It's the clear winner to me.

It's the equivalent of the San Jose Saber Cats beating the Dallas Cowboys in Texas Stadium.
