Technical Help thread (AKA, Ask BFG!)

Hey, I thought it would be a good idea to have one thread for asking technical questions.
For newbies who may not know, BFG is the guy who usually knows the answer when somebody (usually me) has a computer question. (Even though he doesn't post that much other than that.)
But it doesn't have to be BFG, anybody can throw in their 2 cents if they think they know the answer to somebody's question.
So, here's my question to start us off:
When we got our tax refund this year, we decided to become a two computer household and picked up a laptop that Jen uses, and I use the desktop. We also picked up a wireless router for her to connect to the web.
She's become obsessed with this goofy game 2ndLife and plays for hours, but it crashed constantly. So we tried hooking her up to the modem directly, and there were no more crashing problems. Awesome.
So we naturally figured that the problem was that the wireless connection wasn't... I don't know, stable enough or whatever. So the wireless router also works as an ethernet router--it has four jacks on the back to split the internet connection to four wired computers. But if we hook the router up to the modem and use ethernet cords for both computers, she has the exact same problem. It doesn't matter if it's wireless or ethernet, if she goes through the router she crashes all the time. 2L is only stable for her if her ethernet cord goes directly to the modem.
So what do we need to do differently? Other than telling her to quit playing 2L so much, I already know that, thanks in advance....
Is there a different way to split the internet between more than one computer that works better than a router? In case its important the router we have is a Belkin G Plus Mimo Router....
