Did anyone happen to catch this over the weekend? It's not available anymore (apparently, they're gonna be selling it via the website soon, and then later, on DVD), but I watched it over the weekend, and it was REALLY funny.
For those of you not in the know, Joss Whedon (masterful creator of shining moments in TV such as Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly) was bored during the writer's strike last year... so he decided to get all of his friends together to make a silly little thing to be put up on the web.
The story is this: Dr. Horrible (played by Neal Patrick Harris) is a low-rent district supervillain, who aspires to join the 'League of Evil', but has to prove to 'Bad Horse' (the leader of the League) that he's worthy of their ranks. So he attempts to take over the world with the use of his Freeze Ray. But there's one tiny snag... he's fallen in love with a girl he met at the laundromat.
So the entire story is a musical about Dr. Horrible, the girl Penny, and Dr. Horrible's nemesis, Captain Hammer (played perfect and arrogantly by Nathan Fillion - Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly) - and how they interact.
The story was told in three parts. Each of the three parts was made available for free on the website: www.drhorrible.com - but for a week only (which ended last night). After last night, the musical will go up for sale on the web, and on DVD later on, to help recoup the (fairly small) costs of making the short. It's about 30-45 minutes, all told, and it's really funny.
The songs in the musical are REALLY catchy, and I've got to think that between this and Buffy: The Musical, that Joss Whedon has really got a future on Broadway at some point. I love the lyrics he writes, and the music is just so entertaining. Surprisingly, all actors involved are really decent singers. I was surprised at Neal Patrick Harris' ability to harmonize. :-)
