I think we came to an agreement on the ESPN Baseball board that 3 rounds was a fair protection. So we're gonna go with that. But beyond that, what are the specs? And if we vote for a franchise option, argue logistics here in the thread.
For the guys who aren't in the baseball league, some definitions:
Protection: Number of draft rounds in which players taken can NOT be kept
Penalty: Draft pick lost for keeping a given player (for example, if J.P. Losman gets drafted in the 7th round, and I kept him for the next year, my penalty would be either my 6th or 5th round pick - depending on what we agree on)
Franchise: Tag you can put on a player to keep him at lessor no penalty (depending on what we agree to)
You can keep anyone drafted in or after the 4th round for next year's team at the cost of a draft pick one round higher of where you drafted the guy in THIS year's draft.
For example: I take a flyer on Mike Vick in the 15th round and the Feds let him off the hook and he has a great second half for Atlanta. Should I decide to keep him, I lose my 14th round pick next year.
You can keep a max of three guys. HOWEVER, one of those guys you can put a "Franchise" tag on, which allows you to keep him at no cost at all. So long as you leave the Franchise tag on him, he's yours forever. But, as soon as you take the Franchise tag off him to place on another player, that player automatically goes back into the draft pool for the following year. (I don't think this will be much of a factor in the football league, as opposed to the baseball league, but I could be wrong.)

The "Franchise" player, that is only for the players that are keeper eligible, right?
Also, if you keep two players that were drafted at the same round (say you ended up obtaining them through trades, or they were both free agents), how does that work out?

Yeah, Franchise is only for keeper eligible players.
If it works like the baseball league then if you keep 2 guys in the 7th round and have only 1 7th Rd pick you'll lose a 6th for the 2nd guy. Not sure if Mike's doing it that way.
Or don't do either. If you can't find an image you like at either than don't force it. Just give me something you like and which will look good on the board.
