Sadly, I know someone thats such a huge Orton fan, he'd probably defend him for that. Hell, he did it when Orton went on his drunken hotel spree.

But I've seen his fans basically warn people who say that they're going to an autograph signing that there's a good chance he'll be an asshole. And people who come back with stories about how rude he was to them never seem to get anything but "Yeah, he can be like that." How true it is, I have no idea. But I've seen plenty of fan complaints and plenty of HIS fans who called him an asshole.

As for Benoit? I guess I was comparing him to guys like Holly instead of JBL. Grizzled old vet who thinks physical abuse is a proper way to introduce wrestlers into customs. I seem to recall a few stories of embarrassing hazings, although I don't recall any rape stories. Of course I haven't read the recent book on him and supposedly there's a lot of nasty stuff in it. And apparently as soon as Benoit killed his wife we got a lot of people suddenly remembering that he MIGHT have been abusive to her. I LOVED Benoit and he was easily my favorite wrestler, but I have for many years thought he seemed like a real bastard and a prick. The way he was talked about and mentioned in the lockerroom and the stories always seemed to tell the story of Bob Holly basically, except that with Benoit his talent level seemed to mean that the stories were glossed over.

Bob Holly is a bitter old man because he never had real success. Benoit did. So he was just a disciplined and passionate veteran who demanded the same from his peers. Taking rape aside JBL and Taker can be said to do the same sort of things but Taker is a lockerroom leader while JBL is a bully. As a sports fan its not really a foreign idea to me. The guys who produce and have become the on field leaders of the team can get away with a lot more in the eyes of fan and management than they guys who are struggling or are just role players. If the struggling hitter who was never much more than a mediocre player is giving a rookie a hard time for not running out a grounder, fans will often call him unfair and jealous. But if the star does the same he's probably just giving the rookie proper motivation and being a team leader.

Interesting. And I agree with your analysis of why it was accepted for Benoit and not Holly and his ilk.

As for Benoit, again, it goes back to treatment of fans. I had never heard a bad word about him (quite the oppostie, really) when it came to really giving back to the fans. His hazing stories also seemed to be centered around guys who actually deserved it, as opposed to JBL and Holly who simply bully and intimidate people because they can.

Of course, he still killed his family, so this discussion seems rather pointless, all things considered.
