Recomend me a "Dungeon" game.

So back when I was a kid I had all Apples because my dad swore by them. I love them too so I don't blame him but the problem for a kid was there were like NO games made for Apple back in the day. I'd walk into computer stores and it would be walls of PC games and like one shelf of Apple. Which led me to purchase a game I probably never would have if it weren't one of the only half way interesting looking ones there. Dungeon Master.
This Dungeons and Dragons sort of thing with magic and shit never would have been my first choice as I don't like that stuff but I kinda loved this game. I mean, I don't think I ever had enough patience to "win" it but I loved the idea of building a group of guys from many options, collecting items, and exploring this dungeon. I just had a lot of fun. Now I look back and I find that Dungeon Master was apparently a really popular and revolutionary game at the time but damned if I knew that then.
So anyway, I'm not a gamer anymore and outside of sports games, Mario, and Zelda I really haven't followed games at all. So I kinda want a game like Dungeon Master. I was kind of hoping there'd be a Dungeon Master X or something but no luck. I expect Final Fantasy is kind of like DM but there's like 30 of them and I really don't feel like wasting money on one of those if it isn't. So I turn to you geeks to help me out.
Anyone remember Dungeon Master and want to recommend a newer game? I mean, it doesn't have to be a 2008 game. Remember, I'm not a gamer so recommending a kick ass classic game from the '90s might be good enough for me. Odds are I never played it. Playstation 2, Wii, Virtual Console... hell, I still have my N64 even though it doesn't seem too easy to find used games anymore. I bought some random game on Virtual Console that looked similar and was severely disappointed so now I'm looking for a recommendation.
I was in GameStop today looking around and half compelled to ask the dude to help me out, but I didn't feel like looking like an idiot because video game nerds are often condescending jerks in my experience (much like Comic Book Shop and Used Music Store nerds). So I figure you guys already know me to be stupid so no biggie.
I'm pretty sure I still have Dungeon Master ported for the SNES so maybe I should just plug that system in.
