Rampage really kind of sucked. Only way it could be fun was if you were playing 2 players and you could piss off the other guy by eating him.

Yes, Rampage isn't half as much fun one-player. So? That's true of lots of great games.

I dunno. MK was just more complete I guess. I mean, I'd probably feel compelled to not vote MK over a fuller game that had more to it than just the fights. And MK, like Rampage, is a game that only gets its full fun when there's another guy there with you. Fighting games are pretty limited IMO and woudln't rank too high on my ballot (if I had made it). But Rampage is a game that I'd see as below those fighting games as its really about as mindless and pointless as any. Fun on occasion, but there's not a bit of me that longs to play it again or remembers good times playing it. Best I can remember was playing my little sister and having her storm out of the room in frustration the 6th or so time I ate her guy even though I kept promising I'd stop.

Oddly both games are ones I preferred in arcade form to home console.

The thing about Rampage was the attitude. You an another person or two shoved your quarters in and just had fun beating the crap out of buildings. Sure it was pointless with no kind of endgame in sight ever, but that was kinda the point to me...it was low-pressure Gauntlet with out the pressure of that damned elf destroying the food. You talked with each other, you cracked jokes; you had fun.

MK was a fun fighting game, but most fighting games easily get the fun sucked out of them by the other people around you. The guy that juggled you in the corner. The guy that hasn't left the arcade since the machine was installed and has learned everything there is to know about it. The overly aggressive guy that never quite realized that trashtalking complete strangers and then throwing tantrums and slamming the console isn't quite acceptable behavior in society. The mob of gawkers that just hover around the machine because while they are more than happy to shout out demands that the players do something, they can't can't be bothered with spending their own money to play.

Yeah, I DID spend a lot of time arcades growing up, what's your point?

Or, you know, you could go to the arcade with a friend or two and play against them instead of weirdo strangers. Just a thought.

Clearly you weren't an MK fan. The odds of going to an arcade and being able to grab both joysticks and stay there for an extended period of time with a friend were slim. Nope. You had to wait in line, grab a joystick against the reigning guy, and then win to hold onto your spot. It was the same as dropping quarters on a pool table in a bar. Win and the table is yours. Loser moves to the back of the line.

Seriously, MK and other fighter games were all about the battle for control of the machine that inevitable had you playing those weirdos trash talking you and kicking your ass with moves you didn't even know were in the game.

Then you lost and had to go play Rampage with your buddy because there was no line there.

EDIT: While i don't think Serg is THAT much older than me I think this is another example of the very small generational gap between gamers because that whole '90s MK/Street Fighter/NeoGeo era of arcades was a fucking BATTLE! But Serg seems to prefer the 8 bit old 70s and 80s games like Gorf.

You're absolutely right. The MK craze was exactly when I lost interest in playing the latest games to hit the arcade, and would just go play my old favorites instead.

Have any of you ever gone back and played the original MK? Hell, I loved it A LOT when it first came out and dumped countless quarters into the machine, my parents bought it for me for the Genesis and I played it for weeks.

But seriously, go back and play it now... it's really not that good of a game at all.

The hell it's not. The fatalities are lacking now, but as a fighting game it's still good--all things considered.

I'm willing to concede that. In fact the smart votes probably would have been for MK Trilogy, which has all the characters and zones from 1, 2, and 3 with much the same game mechanics.

I don't think I played either in the arcade, just on the home consoles, so maybe the home console versions were lacking. I was never a huge fan of fighting games, but MK was fun. Rampage, not so much really.
