First off I can just say one thing.

Wow.

I've played with an iPhone before, but the Android seems more revolutionary. This isn't a knock on the iPhone at all.

I know that seems trite, but Google has had a year of watching Apple, plus they have the benefit of being opensource.

There are already some really cool apps out for it, and they are free. I'll add more details on the OS and different apps, but so far I'm really impressed as someone who's been using smartphones since the original Blackberry.

how is the web browser? is it as smooth an intuitive as the iphone?

it seems to me that no matter what they do, it still doesn't beat the iphone since the iphone is ALSO YOUR IPOD!

and that's not just pro-iphone babble. quite frankly the iphone loses too since you cant do something as simple as send a picture message.

and they both lose since you can't get either on verizon.

The web browser is chrome, which is using webkit, so that's a push. The browser is quite good and zooming ect is intuitive.

The Android has music capabilities built in and isn't limited to aac and mp3 files, so you mileage may vary on that. The music player is akin to the iPod's interface I supposse. The android supports picture messages, and all that. Plus the apps out so far are pretty killer.

i also have beef with the lack of a hard drive. SD cards suck.

that being said, i like the integration it has with your google account that i've seen in the demos. i just feel someone's gotta sit down and do a "best of both" before i can jump on the bandwagon.

I'll have to verify, but I believe it has a 8 GB built in RAM chip. For video it natively supports youtube and flash. I've also played some movies I ripped onto a card and played around with some other stuff.

When I get more proficient with it Ziggy I'll do a more through writeup.

Perhaps I can get my "tech nemesis" ;D to write up the same on the iPhone...

Okay, as someone who's not yet on board with all the Iphone hype (or Apple, in general), I've been curious what people think of the G1 and Android in general.

This is gonna be a dumb question, but there is a reason behind it:

How good is the actual PHONE portion of the phone?

I ask this because my parents are on AT&T and they get the shittiest reception ever. And I hate it when my friend calls be from his Iphone because it sounds equally shitty.

Been a long-time Sprint fan (5 years running). My contract just expired, and I've been exploring my other options out there. The G1 has been at the top of my list to look more into.

I quite like the phone portion. As a long-time smartphone user I've used Blackberries since the original, and a BlackJack and AT&T Tilt. The Android is really good for dialing response, as well as clarity. I haven't had any problems thus far with it. The only "knock" per se is that the speakerphone isn't really loud, even on full bore volume, but in a car with closed windows it's good. If you use Bluetooth then that's a moot point.

I'd reccomend it. I quite like it. One of the Sales pimps at work stole my Android for a hour at lunch and bought one that day and gave his iPhone to his wife.

Wow, I didn't know that. Isn't pix/flix messaging like a standard thing on phones now? Hope they add that to the next iPhone model, or at least add it to an iPhone before I can get one.

Maybe it's because I'm not a text message kinda guy, but I've never had any issues sending an email with a picture from my iPhone.

Oh, and hold off on getting the G1...there's a bunch of new Android phones coming out that won't look like ass. I'm sorry, but HTC makes a bunch of phones that have more style then the G1's fisher price myfirstphone look.
