Right now, I have all my comics in about 10 long boxes sealed in bags (with cardboard), in the closet in my son's room. We are getting to a point where we need that closet space, so my wife asked if we could move them to the attic. Now, we have an attic above our garage, and an attic that you can get to from an upstairs hallway. My question is, do you think it's safe to store them in one of these attics? I really can't afford a monthly fee just for a climate controlled storage unit.

You obviously need to beat your wife for even making a suggestion that you move your stuff into the attic.

Comic boxes suck. What you should do depends on why you are holding on to your old comics.

A) "I'm just a packrat." Yeah, put 'em up in the attic, and quit worrying about mylar and boxes. They'll be fine.

B) "I have a ton of really exclusive variants and such that I'm sure will be worth a fortune any day now." You should really spring for that climate-controlled storage unit. And then set it on fire. With your comics inside. And yourself.

C) "I have a collection of comics I bought new for the enjoyment of reading them, but I figure I'd better take good care of them since they might be worth something someday." No. 99.99% of comics from the last 25 years will never be worth much. Quit worrying about their climate control.

D) "No, I know that --I just want to keep them in nice shape to enjoy re-reading them, and maybe pass them on to my kids someday." They'll be fine in the attic. Most of my comics were in my Mom's attic for decades, mostly without bags or boards, and while they aren't in Mint shape, they didn't fall apart or anything. The biggest danger to them to watch out for if you have them in boxes, but without backers, be sure the box is firmly packed, otherwise they eventually collapse under their own weight and acquire a bend to the lower right-hand corner that won't come out. Especially newer issues (newer than early-80s) that were made with heavier paper.

E) "Actually I have a pretty valuable collection of rare and high-grade comics, and I want to preserve the investment value of my collection." OR "I don't care what you say, I love my comics and I want to keep them as close to Mint as possible even if they'll never be worth a fortune." Then do what this guy did:



Even if it wouldn't actually take up less space, you're wife would probably find it a lot less objectionable than a bunch of junky cardboard boxes out in the open, and you'd get the closet back. And it would make it a lot easier to organize and access your books.
