Red Cliff is a chinese historical war movie about self proclaimed Prime Minister Cao Cao, after conquering the northern regions of China and making the Emperor his puppet, finds his progress challenged by two kingdoms of the south who form an alliance and prepare to meet his army at the titular Red Cliff.
The film's had a rather rocky road to production, with Chow Yun Fat and Ken Watanabe dropping out of their roles and budget problems, but in the end Woo's made his best film in years. It's epic, emotional with great battle scenes and an accessible enough story with plenty of cool characters. The original cut in china was so long that the film got released in two parts over there, being over 4 hours long in total, but for here it's been cut down to 2 and a 1/2. Despite a few niggles and a feeling that the battles had been shortened, it still pretty much feels like a whole film despite this. No release date for the US is announced yet, but when it comes out, go see it.
