A gang of thieves probably worked silently and carefully so as to avoid waking the man they were robbing nor drawing the attention of anyone else.

A group of cops probably kicked in his door and he woke up to a bunch of men with pulled guns yelling and feared for his life, thus "fight or flight" kicking in.
