So, I just got back from seeing Extract. I was super excited, because it's Mike Judge, and because of the trailers. It looked REALLY funny.
Unfortunately, I have to give everyone a recommendation to take a pass on this movie. It feels REALLY forced, and for some reason, gave me the impression that it was a cheap knockoff of Election (dunno who of you have seen that movie). The only real signature Judge had on the movie was the scene he was in, and even that really wasn't all that funny.
Thinking back on movies like Office Space and Idiocracy, I was really looking forward to this. I guess it's not really fair to compare this to those movies, but when Judge slapped his name (and Office Space) on all the trailers, it's unfortunately going to provide a point of reference in my head.
The story was slow to develop, and actually really rather dull. There were no unexpected twists, and once you realized the direction the plot was going, it went in that same direction all the way to the end of the road. No surprises, and very little humor to support the plot.
Jason Bateman was REALLY disappointing in this movie. I *love* Arrested Development. It seems to me that Mike Judge does also, because every scene that Bateman is in really pushes that character type (the somewhat rational person in an irrational world) to the limit, and not in a very humorous way. You almost feel sorry for his character, but not in a good way.
One shining star of the movie, though, surprisingly, is Ben Affleck. The scenes he's in are actually pretty funny. Granted, I've always been appreciative of stoner humor, so your mileage may vary, but I really liked the drug scenes with Affleck involved.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend holding on this one until it's in the RedBox $1 rental list. Slow to develop. Not really all that funny. And definitely NOT Mike Judge at his best.
