NOTE: I screwed up and forgot to start the Wrapup on Friday this week, so I lack the information/insight I sometimes have. Sorry.
Dev saw his undefeated run come to an end at the hands of Vols. Solly notched the first shutout of the season against Pun, his first win against him in 3 years. Lucky came back from the bring to extend his division lead by beating AA. MKid's 4 week winning streak ended at the hands of GM, dropping him back from his near division lead. Mikey held onto a close win against Army to get right back into the direct chase for the division. And Grover lost again, this time at the hands to fellow dungeon dweller Moose. The first week of Interleague Play was an even 3-3 between division and we head into Week 2 (er Week 9).
Interleague Play
Its been a season of firsts for Beat Me Solly including their first W against Moose and last week's win against Pun, the first since 2006. Solly was looking to keep it going this week as he entered his matchup with Lucky's Spreadsheet Studs 0-6-2 against them lifetime. But Lucky took an early lead with both hitting and pitching and with half the season through it looked like Lucky had a shot to shutout Solly the week after he recorded the first in years. But Solly's team came fighting back over the weekend to stop that, but not enough. A poor pitching Sunday made things close in a few stats but in the end Lucku kept his season run going and stayed undefeated against Solly with an 11-2-1 victory.
GM's Comerica National Park comes into this week 1.5 G out of 1st and having won in 4 of the last 5 weeks. He also comes in with a lifetime record of 4-1-0 against Pun's It Byrne's When I Peavy. For Pun's side he is on a 2 week losing streak and has lost 4 of his last 5, fighting hard to not end his season before the All Star break. Pun's offense stepped up in that role winning HR, K, AVG, and OPS and coming with 1 R and 5 RBI of those categories. But GM's pitching was phenomenal and with a 2.14 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 75 Ks almost swept the week except for Holds. Ultimately GM goes to 6-1-0 lifetime against Pun and wins his 5th in 6 weeks by a final score of 9-5-0.
A week ago MKid's Dual National Champions got within half a game of the Cupcakes Division but a speed bump left him 5 back this week. Army's Balad Shithooks is in much the same position having climbed within 1.5 Gs of the Bananas Division, promising a battle of two strong teams. But the matchup wouldn't be as close as it looked on paper. Army's vaunted offense once again stepped up and SWEPT all 7 offensive categories even if a number of the battles were close. His pitching didn't fail either as a 3.38 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 4 HLDs made for a bad week for MKid. Kid takes another backwards step in his race but Army takes a big step forward with an 11-2-1 victory.
After a red hot start Mikey's Blue Sox saw some stumbles the last few weeks but got back on the winning track and in the division race. Moose's OneEyed Jacks has had much the reverse season as a bad start left him in he dungeon but he's made some strides to get back in the pack of late. Midway through the week Moose would hold a large lead as he looked to score the upset, but the weekend would turn things around. 12 HRs, 35 RBIs, and a .731 OPS was enough to score wins against a struggling Mikey's offense but Moose wouldn't score much else. Mike's pitching did not suffer the same struggles as his pitching and a 2.99 ERA and 1.13 WHIP helped him along. All told Mikey's team produced enough to do the job and net him an 8-5-1 victory on the week.
Bananas Division leader Dev's Jersey ColdFusion saw an end to his 6 week undefeated streak last week and sees his hold on 1st challenged. Grover's New Day Co-Op just continues his quest for his first victory of the season. Unfortunately for Dev this looked like the week. An amazing pitching performance from Grover started things with a 1.53 ERA and 0.93 WHIP that few would have any chance of beating. But the real damage came in a very close offensive battle that saw Dev come close but ultimately fall in 6 of 7 categories. When all was said and done Grover nabbed not only his first every victory against Dev but his first victory of the season, a definitive 10-3-1 linescore.
No team has struggled more of late than AA's 3-Time! 3-Time! 3-Time! with 6 losses in his last 7 matchups. On the other hand Vols' Schwetty Vols have won 2 straight and have climbed back over .500 and into the outside looks of division contention. Neither side's pitching impressed but AA's 67 Ks and 6 Ws were strong and he managed to narrowly notch ERA and WHIP wins with scores of 4.12/1.24 to 4.26/1.38. But Vols would make that moot thanks to a clean sweep of the offensive stats including a whopping 10 SBs to beat a total of 8 that would have normally done AA fine. With Vols taking 7 of 7 offensive categories and AA taking 6 of 7 pitching the difference on the week came in a single Loss that gave Vols the 4-5 edge and an 8-6-0 victory.
In the battle between the division after splitting Week 1 of Interleague Play the Cupcakes take Week 2 4-2.
The big move this week was clearly Army's as he becomes the third team to sit on top of the Bananas Division thanks to his big win. Despite winning GM falls back a game to 2.5 back. Dev's loss does significant damage not only dropping him out of 1st for the first time since Week 4 but also drops him back to 3rd and 6.5 back. Solly had climbed within 3 of the division lead last week but now falls back to 10.5 thanks to his week. AA loses another 4 games in the standings and Moose 4.5 as both stay at the bottom of the division.
On the Cupcakes side of things Lucky's big win builds him a comfortable lead of 8.5 Gs over Mikey after being within half a game of losing 1st 2 weeks ago. MKid falls hard from 5 Gs back to 14 in a distant 3rd. Vols finds himself back in contention at 15 back but only 1 G behind Kid. Grover's big first win not only ends his run but also takes him out of last place, but still 29.5 games behind 1st and well out of contention. And finally Pun finds himself a whopping 37 Gs back (20+ behind the last playoff spot) and openly contemplating an early firesale.
In the vs. league average tables, 0.00 is the league average. Anything more than 1.00 either positive or negative is very strong (or weak if negative). Once you get up (or down) near 2.00 it's a number that lends itself to being a statistical anomaly and is due to come back to the pack sooner or later.
Longest Winning Streak - MKid, 4 Weeks (W4 - W7); Current: Vols, 3 Weeks (W7 - W9)
Longest Losing Streak - Grover, 5 Weeks (W1 - W5); AA, 5 Weeks (W2 - W6); Current - Pun, 3 Weeks (W7 - W9)
Longest Undefeated Streak - Dev, 6 Weeks (W2 - W7); Current: Lucky, 5 Weeks (W5 - W9)
Longest Winless Streak - Grover, 8 Weeks (W1 - W8); Current: - Pun, 3 Weeks (W7 - W9)
Interleague play moves on! The Cupcakes lead the season edge 7-5, so can the Bananas come back in Week 3 (Week10)? New Bananas Division leader Army faces off against Grover who'd like nothing more than to follow up his 1st W of the season with a new streak. Cupcakes Division leader Lucky looks to pad his lead but won't have an easy time against the surging GM. Dev looks to recover from his fall from 1st to 3rd but finds his competition no treat as Mikey looks to make up lost ground on 1st place in the CD. MKid looks to bounce back and get back into contention for 1st against Moose, who has been unable to get a foothold this season. Vols looks to continue his steady movement into contention against Solly, who has had an up and down season and once again finds himself on the outside looking to get back in. And finally 2 teams in desperate need of wins face off as AA takes on Pun. Will the Bananas strike back against the Cupcakes? Will the Cupcakes support their claims of league dominance? Can Lucky maintain his lead and will Army hang onto his longer than the last 2 division leaders? We shall see!
