Last Week
Army became the 3rd team to sit on top of the Bananas division in only 9 weeks thanks to a big win over MKid. Cupcakes leader Lucky got some breathing room with a blowout victory over Solly. Grover recorded his first victory of the season over the (former) Bananas leader Dev, who took a hard fall into 3rd. Mikey fought to keep pace with the Cupcakes leader as he beat Moose. Vols rung up his 3rd straight W against AA. And GM keep up his winning ways handing Pun his 3rd L in a row. We saw the first sign of any division edge in interleague play as the Cupcakes went 4-2-0 on the week, giving then a 7-5-0 lead on the Bananas going into Week 3 of Interleague Play (Week 10).
Interleague Play
Both Lucky's Spreadsheet Studs and GM's Comerica National Park came into the week on 2 week winning streaks, so at least one had to end. Going into the weekend the Cupcakes leader held the slimmest of leads 6-5-3 thanks to a strong offensive showing that included 10 HRs and a .976 OPS. But GM was keeping pace and a stellar 1.69 ERA and 1.01 WHIP was the difference in an equally close pitching battle. The lead would switch several times during the week and the battle would remain closely contested into Sunday. Lucky managed to keep the offensive display going including 7 SB over the weekend that would nab him all offensive categories except Ks. GM's ERA lead proved insurmountable but a pair of Ws and 23 Ks would get Lucky last minute victories and close off the week with his 3rd win in a row, beating GM 8-5-1.
Pun's It Byrne's When I Peavy comes into this week having lost 3 straight but AA's 3-Time! 3-Time! 3-Time! isn't playing much better as both teams came into the week with 2 Ws and 7 Ls on the year. Going into the weekend Pun was leading an underwhelming offensive battle with 3 HRs, a .263 AVG, and a .776 OPS (good enough to beat AA's 2 HRs, .193 AVG, and .526 OPS). Things weren't much more impressive on the pitching side where AA held the edge with 1 SV, a 4.40 ERA, and a 1.40 WHIP (again, good enough to top Pun's 0 SVs, 6.96 ERA, and 1.91 WHIP). AA would hold an 8-5-1 edge. Over the weekend neither team would do much to change the tone of the week. Pun would add 6 HRs and drop his ERA more than a run more than a run, but it would do little to change the score. In the end Pun would grab AVG by 4 hundreths of a point but drop the offensive K category, leaving AA where he started with an 8-5-1 victory.
MKid's Dual National Champions took a hard fall the last 2 weeks from .5 a game back from 1st to 14 back. He wants to get back to the top while Moose's OneEyed Jacks are just fighting hard to get out of the basement and stay alive. Kid took a 10-3-1 lead into the weekend but one that was much closer than it looked with only 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, and 1 L keeping Moose behind. Things would stay close all weekend. An 8-7 HR lead for Moose would end 13-12 for him while he'd take the RBI score from 21-23 to 38-36 and a tie in R at 38. But unfortunately for Moose Kid's pitching would dominate in ERA and WHIP and nail 2 more categories by only 2 K and 1 HLD. For Moose it would be another week of a solid performance that just fell short as Kid would finish with a 9-4-1 victory.
Two teams on a mission face off. Mikey's Blue Sox has been chasing the Cupcakes lead all season while Dev's Jersey ColdFusion fell out of 1st in the Bananas last week and would like to get back. A matchup that should be even by records was exactly that going into the weekend with a 6-6-2 tie. Mikey's pitching was stellar with a 2.95 ERA and 1.03 WHIP but his era would rise over a run and a half and Dev would nab the category from him along with 4 Ws to take a 2nd. Mikey would answer back by taking AVG from Mikey. Dev would carry a lead into the final game of the week but with Mikey pitching Chris Carpenter this matchup would continue into the night. Mikey would nab the WHIP category by as close a battle as you could expect (1.23 to 1.25) but would also grab a 5th L to lose that category. In the end Mikey did some damage but was unable to turn the week back in his direction as Dev walks away with an 8-5-1 win.
Grover's New Day Co-Op scored his first victory of the season, and a big one over Bananas leader Dev. But his opponent this week is the new Bananas leader Army's Balad Shithooks who has won 4 of his last 5 and looks to keep his momentum going. Going into the weekend things when exactly as you'd expect with Army holding a big 10-2-2 lead. Army's formidable offense wasn't doing much during the week but were strong enough to top Grover's meager 11 Rs, 13 RBIs, .199 AVG, and .591 OPS. Grover's offense would step up over the weekend getting 6 HRs, 19 RBIs, and 7 SB... but amazingly Army's offense once again came alive over the weekend. 9 HRs, 19 Rs, 27 RBIs, and 6 SB completely negated all of Grover's turn around. With pitching holding largely even it was once again Army's offense that managed to gain a category and sweep all 7 categories, resulting in a final of 11-2-1.
Its been an up and down season for Beat Me Solly that has seen him in 1st place and avoiding the basement, has seen him get his first career win against Moose but fall for the 7th time to Lucky, and which saw him nearly shutout Pun 2 weeks ago to get within 4 of the division only to get nearly shutout last week by Lucky to fall back to 10.5 back. Turning it back around won't be easy as his opponent is Vols' Schwetty Vols riding a 3 week winning streak and chasing the season record of 4. Things looked good for Vols going into the weekend as a 1.83 ERA and 1.25 WHIP spearheaded a 10-2-2 lead, but Solly wasn't far behind in most categories. On the offensive side Solly would take back the R category by a score of 26-25 and fall within 2 HR, 1 SB, and 1 RBI of more. On the pitching side he'd manage to draw even in L and take W by 1. But Vols held strong in most categories and managed to turn offensive K into a W from a T. When all was said and done the score would change but the result would remain the change as Solly gets crushed 9-4-1 and Vols ties Kid's season record of 4 Ws in a row.
After two weeks the battle between divisions had the Cupcakes winning 7-5-0 over the Bananas. This week the two divisions split 3-3-0 to leave the Cupcakes with a 10-8-0 lead on the season series.
Standings
No movement in the standings this week, just teams moving closer and further away. Cupcakes leader Lucky has an 11.5 game lead, the largest of the season. Mikey has fallen back a step and into the pack, only 1.5 games in front of MKid who is turn only 1 G behind Kid. That's when the pack breaks up as while there's only 2.5 Gs separating 2nd and 4th in the division there are 21.5 Gs between 4th and 5th. Grover holds a small edge over Pun who sits in the back of the league at 40 Gs back.
Over on the Bananas side of things Army manages to not only hold onto the lead but build a healthy 8.5 G lead. GM's loss sets him back a but but still leaves him in 2nd 1 G ahead of Dev. Despite his victory Dev is further from 1st than he was last week at 9.5 back. Solly's loss leaves him in 4th but drops him hard from 10.5 back to 17.5 back. AA is another guy who managed to score a win but lose ground as he's 18.5 Gs back. And finally Moose stays in the back of the division at 24 Gs behind 1st.
The most notable part of the standings this week is that for (I believe) the first time this season if the playoffs began today there would not be 3 teams from each League. Vols at .532 represents the last playoff spot at this moment in 4th place of the Banana's division. Meanwhile Dev finds himself outside the playoffs, albeit by only half a game.
Mikey's Stats
In the vs. league average tables, 0.00 is the league average. Anything more than 1.00 either positive or negative is very strong (or weak if negative). Once you get up (or down) near 2.00 it's a number that lends itself to being a statistical anomaly and is due to come back to the pack sooner or later.

Firesales?
Its still not half way through the season and 8 weeks away from the trade deadline but spring cleaning may be coming early this year as rumblings have begun. And its hard to blame people as the 2009 season has been a considerable case of the "haves" and "have nots." Grover and Pun have just been unable to get their wheels going this season, probably in part thanks to the schedule (Grover has faced Lucky and MKid twice as well as the red hot Army, while Pun has seen Mike and Vols twice and GM in interleague play). They now find themselves 35-40 games back of 1st place and 21.5 - 26 games out of a playoff spot. Moose has had more success on his season with 3 Ws and 2 Ts but none of it has translated to the standings as he finds himself a full 24 games out of 1st and 15 Gs out of the playoffs. And perhaps the most frustrating team is Solly's who started the season in 1st place but has gone 1-6-0 since falling out of 1st in large part to a rash of injuries, a problem that has seemingly plagued his team for years. At 17.5 games back and 8.5 Gs back of the playoffs Solly may once again be looking to firesale early as many key parts sit on the DL unable to help for weeks or longer. And of course while the two time champion AA is believed to still be playing for the season it can not be ignored that he is a full game behind Solly.
One thing we know from past seasons is that sooner or later teams will start selling and then the face of the playoffs may change drastically.
This Week
Its a battle of #1s as the Cupcakes leader Lucky and the Bananas leader face off. With a comfortable division lead Lucky tries to extend his undefeated streak to a season record 7 weeks while Army looks to gain the same distance for his division lead, but hasn't defeated Lucky since 2006. "Father vs son" as AA (who is looking to get into serious contention) takes on Mikey (who looks to recover from only his 2nd loss of the season). Mikey has only beat AA once in 9 meetings. Pun looks to avoid losing his 5th straight tying the season record held by AA and Grover while his opponent Moose looks to recover from 4 Ls in 5 weeks and keep his season from ending early. The hottest team in the league Vols looks to win his 5th straight against GM who was riding a similarly hot run before being derailed this week. With both nailing Ws and improving their place in the standings MKid and Dev face off both looking to get back to the top of their divisions. And finally Solly looks to avoid another early firesale while Grover tries to get only his 2nd W of the season. Our 4th of 5 weeks of Interleague play is on us with the Cupcakes leading the season at 10-8. In a very even week of matchups based on standings will the leagues continue to fight even, will the Cupcakes score some more wins, or will the Bananas fight back?
