Last week...
In the opening week of the 2009 season Solly got off to the best start with a 12-2 victory over rival Moose to lead the Bananas. In a matchup of the 1 and 2 teams last season for the Cupcakes division Lucky took an 11-2-1 victory off of 2008 Division Winner Pun to lead the Cupcakes. A battle of the 2008 Champion GM and 2006-2007 Champion AA left the old man on top with an 8-4-2 victory while last season's worst record holder Army took down Dev to start the season up 8-5-1. To round out the action Mike inched by MKid 7-5-2 after a big weekend for MKid and Vols took down Grover 8-6.
This week...
Second week of the season saw more of the new unblanced schedule in play as folks who made a hot start attempted to increase their division lead while others attempted to recover and avoid digging themselves a hole.
Cupcakes Division
Grover's New Day Co-Op (6-8-0) vs Lucky's Spreadsheet Studs (11-2-1): Two teams on the opposite side of the rankings for Week 1 face off as the division leader looks to hold on. Grover held a narrow lead most of the week but neither team took control. By the end of the week Grover's injury ravaged team was unable to hold on, allowing Lucky and his 14 HRs to take away a 7-5-2 victory.
Pun's It Byrnes When I Peavy (2-11-1) vs Mike's Tarheel's Blue Sox (7-5-2): After finishing the regular season with the best record last year Pun wanted to recover from a bad start of the season but continues to get a rough schedule. A close contest that saw multiple ties and a number of categories decided by narrow margins Mike came away with his 2nd winning week of the season thanks to his much lauded focus on pitching in the draft. A 6-4-4 victory is narrow but keeps him on top and digs the hole a little further for Pun.
MKid's Dual National Champions (5-7-2) vs Vols' Schewtty Vols (8-6-0): Rounding out the Cupcakes action was the #3 and #4 teams facing off and neither managed to gain ground. MKid put up a .319 AVG/.991 OPS/18 HR week but also had 5 Ls, a 7.61 ERA, and 1.61 WHIP. Vols took advantage of that despite an otherwise unspectacular pitching week and the matchup ended in a draw, 7-7.
Bananas Division
Dev's Jersey Cold Fusion (5-8-1) vs AA's 3-Time! 3-Time! 3-Time! (8-4-2): Two time league champion AA looked to keep up his winning ways while Dev looked to rebound from a loss to Army. Dev found the answer with a stellar pitching performance. 71 K, 7 W, 2.13 ERA, and 1.11 WHIP. AA's team managed to rack up 5 HLDs and 6 SB not much us. 10-2-2 win for Dev.
Army's Balad Shithooks (8-5-1) vs Solly's Beat Me Solly (12-2-0): Two big loses from last season won big in Week 2 but something had to give. Or maybe it didn't. Solly's amazing 12 SB proved useless against Army's 13 but his 5.65 ERA proved enough to beat Army's 7.10. Army managed to nudge out 4 of 7 offensive categories while Solly's quantity managed to take in 4 of the pitching categories. In the end it was a 7-7 draw, the 2nd of the week.
Moose's One Eyed Jacks (2-12-0) vs GM's Dual National Park (4-8-2): Last year's Champion and last year's Consolation Champion faced off, each hoping to rack up their first winning week of the season. GM's 3.71 ERA and 1.33 WHIP was a nice start but Moose answered back with a 9-2 W-L record and 73 Ks. In what became the theme of the week another close battle resulted in neither team managing to get in the winning ways. The 3rd 7-7 draw of the week.
Standings
Cupcakes: The division's order remained the same for the 2nd week. Lucky holds on to a 3.5 game lead while Mike remains 1 game ahead of Vols. Vols and MKid remain on either side of the .500 mark after their draw. Grover and Pun take their 2nd losses in a row to fall to the back of the pack, with Pun a full 11 games behind in this early going.
Bananas: Solly remains on top of the division despite his draw but Dev jumps up to 2nd 1 G ahead of Army and 2.5 behind the lead with his big week. The two league champs GM and AA sit even for a tie at 5th while Moose remains a distant 10 Gs behind.
Mike's Statistical Breakdown
Next Week...
Solly and Lucky seek to further their division leads against AA and MKid respectively. In the rest of the Cupcakes division its a match up #2 Mike vs #3 Vols and #5 Grover vs #6 Pun as the division tries to shape out itself. Moose looks to get his first win of the season against Army and avoid digging a hole for himself even without his #1 overall pick A-Rod. Dev looks to keep up his momentum against GM.
